View Full Version : Who's Starters do you like.
BLUE72CAMARO 01-10-2007, 02:50:01 PM I am going to put a new starter on my motor since everything else is new and my old starter wasnt in the best of shape. Who's starters do you guys like I would like the physical size to be as small as possible because it has to clear my kicked out oil pan and the 2" primary headers that I am using.
Gary S 01-10-2007, 03:08:54 PM I use only Genuine GM starters.
Twisted_Metal 01-10-2007, 03:24:05 PM I use only Genuine GM starters.
 Why am I not surprised? ;)
Blue... Are you thinking a mini-starter for header clearance?
Ryan 79 01-10-2007, 03:54:54 PM Powermaster.
Stay away from those cheap $50 to $100 mini starters on Ebay. You'll spend the money on those and then buy a Powermaster once they quit, and you get to pay to have your car towed home also.
Damon 01-10-2007, 04:39:21 PM GMPP and Powermaster have give me good results. I never worked up the courage to buy an ebay cheapie, although they look physically identical in most cases.
Small 153 tooth flexplate use a GMPP 93-97 Camaro/Trans Am LT-1 engine X-reference or Powermaster equivalent:

Larger 168 tooth flexplate use the GMPP big block crate motor starter or the Powermaster 9200 equivalent:

Both are high torque gear-reduction mini starters that will clear just about any set of headers you can find and save quite a bit of weight vs. older full size starters.
I just bought a Powermaster 9200 for the 454 big block I'm building right now. It was about $190 from Summit and came with the proper bolts. Can't remember if the GMPP starter comes with bolts (don't think so).
BLUE72CAMARO 01-10-2007, 04:47:17 PM Yeah I am looking at mini starters or whatever will fit the best and still have enough balls to turn the motor when its hot. Also it needs to be a 153 tooth, since that is all an lt1 bellhousing can hold.
Marv D 01-10-2007, 04:56:28 PM I've been sticking with what has worked for me for a LONG time. I bought one of the Slummit # G1660 mini starters back in 98 for the 12.5:1 motor,,,,, still cranking and it's on a 13.5:1 now and STILL cranking strong. I have had a few troubles with the bendix not retracting all the way with the one I put on the truck. Took it apart, polished the shaft a little, gave it a light grease job and all is working perfectly. 10-12 years on ANY starter on a high compression motor was good enough for me. I'm going to keep recommending those imported Slummit POS house brand starters till one fails me. Pretty sure there made in Korea if memory serves.
BLUE72CAMARO 01-10-2007, 05:29:14 PM Marv D, I think that is what the one that came off my car is. I know it has a made in Korea sticker on it, but there are no other markings.
Orange71 01-10-2007, 06:06:09 PM I have that same Summit mini starter. Never had problem in 8 years.
BlownBigBlock 01-10-2007, 10:11:04 PM Powermaster here...
BLUE72CAMARO 01-11-2007, 09:14:39 AM Ordered a new powermaster last night. I went with this one as it was a decent price compared to some of the others and says it will fit anywhere a stocker will.

Twisted_Metal 01-11-2007, 09:33:37 AM Look like a nice starter!
I hope it's the last one you ever have to buy. Ka-ching...
BLUE72CAMARO 01-11-2007, 11:21:49 AM Yeah me to, but it was only $20 more than the high torque stock style starter.
wyntek1 01-13-2007, 06:32:27 PM I went with a powermaster and I'm very happy with it. Changing starters is a crappy job and you can bet that sob isnt going to die in your driveway when it goes...
ULTM8Z 01-13-2007, 10:31:10 PM I tend to go factory wherever possible. Went with an L98 Corvette high-torque mini starter about 10 years ago. Have NEVER had a problem with it.
Gary S 01-14-2007, 10:08:03 AM My 70SS Camaro came from the factory with GMs high performance starter. It is still cranking strong after 36+ years with no repairs.
My daily driver Chevy pickup also came with a GM heavy duty starter and it cranks up every day just like new 26 years later. I figure it has over 25,000 starts on it already and has never been touched even though it has to start my 350 every day from 110 degrees in the summer to -45 in the winter.
I'll consider aftermarket starters when I start hearing of some that match this performance record.
XxWickedz28xX 01-14-2007, 10:48:21 AM Ive got a powermaster mini starter on my 79z, and couldnt be happier. After I installed the current motor, I reused the stock starter. That thing wouldnt start worth sh*t! The newer engine had a higher compression, so I guess I needed a stronger starter. Once I installed the Powermaster unit, it started right up, and continues to do so.
