I ordered the water pump to manifold by pass hose for a big block the ones up till 1969 come pre- formed. The 1970 is just a piece of hose that is straight. Are these hoses the same size so I can use the bent one. Using the straight one puts a kink in it.

Don't know where you got yours, but everyone I've seen has been been a 90 degree. Have them look one up for a 70 Corvette with an LS5, believe me it's 90 degree. Any local parts store should be able to fix you up.

I ordered it from NPD but I told them it was a 1970. They sent basically a heater hose

I went to lowes and got some heater hose. If you cut it to the proper lenght it doesnt make a kink in it. I had to install it the same time I out the water pump on

Go to your local Schuck's, Napa, or whatever and have a look through their pre-formed 3/4" heater hoses. You will find one that will work eventually. You will have to cut it to size, but in general if you get something with a between 45º and 90º bend on it you should be good to go. I don't like trying to use the straight stuff either because of the kink issue.

By the way, here's what it looks like installed: http://community.webshots.com/photo/125342799/75650243JVnQrF
And here you can see it's not really a 90º bend: http://community.webshots.com/photo/125342799/75147676Urruez

Depends, on your motor is it a long or short water pump? I'm "assuming" you have a long pump, on a short pump it will be a 90 degree.

What do you mean long pump on short pump? I have a long pump.

I always wondered the same thing. The long is reffered to the snout where the impeller is

You want a 90 degree hose? I've bent copper tubing and then slid the hose over it before. Works great.

I don't run the bypass hose. From what I understand its purpose was to provide a path for coolant flow until the T-stat opens and to help the engine reach operating temp faster.
You have to run that hose if your car has air conditioning. Cars with air conditioning do not have flow through the heater core unless the heater is turned on. The heater loop on non A/C cars can provide a bypass for the water pump. I also have 3 holes drilled in my high flow T-stat, this also provides a path for coolant until the T-stat opens.
Not having the bypass hose forces more coolant through the rad and will provide some additional cooling.
A engine with the bypass hose will recirc. some of the coolant all the time within the water pump, instead of the coolant taking the longer path through the rad or heater core.
