Just ran DD and saw 404hp and 489 ft. lbs. I know this motor is torqy. But why more hp. than torque? I just put this BB in a few months ago. I'm also having major "hook up issues". Any help would be great. Here's what it is:
454 blk 359070
396 heads 3964290
Crane gold roller rockers
750 holley
Wiend Stealth intake
280 comp. magnum cam
9:51 flat top piston (speed pro rings)
3:73 posi
trans. cooler
MSD blaster 2 coil and new MSD box W/HEI dist.
50 series flow's w/3" exhaust
1 7/8 hedman headers
3200 8" racing stall
new TCI flywheel
Rebuilt 350th with goodies
B&M mega shifter
New 3 core radiator
gas shocks
CE SFC's
Jegs lift bars
265/60's on the rear
225/60's on the front
This is a 78Z. The car blows the tire's off half way down our local 1/8 mile track (no hood). The best I can get so far is an 8.3 which SUCKS cosidering the $$$ in it. I traded this motor with a board member and added the carb. and intake as well as trans. and the rest of thr mods etc. to get over to the dark side. Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps you can explain to me how you plan to hook street radials up with a race converter and 373 gears with a big block? Buy some slicks or at least drag radials, or install a restrictor plate under the carb.

Heh heh heh...he said BBC and street tires and hook.....lol.....

Won't happen...no way, no how, no sir....

At the least - some street drag tires - BFG's, Nittos's, M/T....something....or some E/T streets....Q/T pros....you need some STICKY tires....you'll prolly get a bit of front end lift when you get some bite in the back....

FYI - I have a stock 60K mile 454....performer intake/dynomax headers....while running a stock TH-350, 3.08 posi rear, and 275/60/15's I can roast the crap outta them w/o any problems....and yours is like 2 points higher compression, a healthy cam, better heads....oh yeah...you need sticky tires http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

First of all you have to decide if your intentions are to race the car predominantly or drive on the street. If you want to race there are a lot of things you can do to improve your 1/8th e.t.

(1) Suspension - you will need to address this issue either with traction bars, ladder bars or 4 link suspension bars. Traction bars being the cheapest way to go. Look at Jegs or Summit for pricing and the advantages of each of the above three systems.

(2) You will need a good racing slick that grabs the track. I would recommend something like a Mickey Thomspson Street E.T. tire.

(3) If you want to improve on your e.t. I would recommend a transbrake for your transmission.

(4) Difinetely go to a lower rear end ratio for racing 4.56, 4.88, or 5.13 are all good for the eight mile. Also, make sure that you have enough RPM's to handle these low gear ratios. There are several math formulas out there to address this conversion.

That just a few suggestions, I would make to lower your e.t. and to get the car to hook up if that is your intentions.

Thanks guys. I definatly plan to add the slicks. What about shocks? Types etc.. What would be the best size slicks, backspacing etc..

Probably a 29 or 30 inch time with a 9 to 10inch width. I personally like the M/T street E/T's. On the shock, you can't go wrong with "koni's" front and rear.

How did you get a 8" race converter to stall at 3200??Is that foot brake or flash? I am only asking because with our set up (read in the profile) a 10" with a flash of 4000 and stall of about 3600worked best for me.I am using a 28x10.50 slick.BTW, cam is a solid roller 595/605 lift.12 to 1 comp,And it's a 468.

Thanks allot Jack.
Primer that's a foot break. The converter only has a few hundred miles on it so far it advertised at 2800-3200. You're set up is sweet. I might change the cam in mine very soon. Any ides on haw fast mine should run in 1/8 or 1/4 mile. What do your slips look like?

Do your cars need S/F/C/s?? Our First Gen. camaros do..

And yes, a big slicks and a good set of cheap "slapper-bars"!!!

Dial her suspension in, roll her outta the hole and roll into her easy as she just kinda gets up and goes sorta deal and you will get there, imho!!

I once read a story about a guy that had a real Cobra with a bored&stroked out to 454", 427" Ford "side-oiler" motor in it!!

The guy raced it with a passenger riding "shot-gun" to balance it out!!

It either bogged, smoked the tires OR when launched just right, it kinda hazed the tires , raised up and took off like a "scalded-dog" to the tune of low 11's easy!!

I think it weighted something like 2400 pounds and "ONLY" had like 585hp in it is all, He, He!!
