What do you guys think is a better deal???
A running 817 small block 400 engine for $250, needs rebuild
or
A running 509 from a 77/78 truck that will also need a rebuild for $350.00
+++++both are virgin blocks
They're both 2bolt blocks right???
Thanks

I believe that all 400s from about 1974-on were 2-bolt, but don't quote me on that.
I have used the 509 block a couple of times. Seemed like a decent piece for a factory casting. Never used an 817.
You'll want to have either one checked thoroughly for cracks before you put any more money in them. If possible, I arrange with the seller to have them checked (at my expense) and if they pass then I fork over the money. Otherwise, I give it back to them. Running doesn't necessarily mean crack-free.

yeah thats what i was planning on doing... Take the block with the seller to make sure it passes inspections... Thanks for the reply! I'll try to see which guy is willing to go through that process...
