First, start off by verifying timing, plugs, wires, and the cap. If these are all dead on, you just got to get the technique down. I like a little brake and a whole lot of the go pedal. Practice make perfect. But, be safe about it ( you dont want to have to give 10 reasons to a police officer, about why burning out is not good.) Just have fun with it. If all else fails go down to a junkyard and get some of the baldest steel belt radials and plenty of white smoke will follow.

Get a tall gear like that to break the tires loose and it'll spin til the cows come home http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
The tires will be spinning soooo fast the car will never catch up.

If you have a Z/28 then most likely you have a 3.42 gear ratio and your problem is not in your gearing if not then check to see if you still have the tag on your rear-end that says what gear ratio you have it should be held on by one of the cover bolts it should say some thing like 3.42 3.08 2.73 if you have a 2.73 or "taller" (numerically lower) gear ratio then that could be part of your problem because it makes it harder for the engine to turn the tires.

Reminds me of my buddies '73 Nova. He had 2.56 gears, but enough engine to turn them over. He burned a whole set of rear tires down to slicks in one burnout!

LT,
When I was in highschool and younger and dumber than I am now, I thought it was cool to lay 500ft+ of black marks, showed power, so I thought. I had a Chevy long bed pickup with a 250 straight six(150hp) and very tall gears w/ a 3 on the tree. I could dump the clutch and start the tires to spin and they would pick up speed to the point that I kept changing gears and never move out of my parking spot in the school parking lot. Speedo sitting over in the corner past 100 and not even moving 5mph in reality, those tires would literally melt off the rims. Oh how stupid and broke I was back then. But when you're 16-17 you have to show off.

Ive never had a car that couldnt spin the tire(s), something has to be up with your tune, or your engine is on its last leg. Even when my camaro had the stock 307, 2brl carb, 2.73 rear gear and rod knock it could still spin the right rear tire. Now days all I have to do is punch the go pedal and she will kick out sideways at my whim.
If all else fails, hold the brake pedal as hard as you can, floor the accelerator and sooner or later one of the rear tires should break loose and start squealing.
