View Full Version : what to do with mi camaro??
mJolnir 01-02-2007, 02:47:14 PM hi guys, i recently adquired a 1976 camaro, it came with the original 305 and the automatic tranny, engine is working good i performed a compression test and is ok, i am currently restoring the bodyand after that is done im lookinginto getting to work the engine.
the thing is, this car is going to be a saturday night drag race car and a sunday cruiser, i was wondering if it would be better to go with a forced induction setup for the 305 or should just swap for a N/A 350, since there are very knowlegeable people in both engines in this forum i would like to get some light this matter. if you know about a good setup for the 305 that might be 400-450ish HP i would like to see it
camaro75LT 01-02-2007, 05:56:07 PM I am a 350 fan, don't bother building a 305. For the money you'd put into a 305 with forced induction, you will easily get 400+ horse from a 350 and not have to spend huge $ on everything to support the boost.
The 305 is in there, a 150 shot nitrous kit is around $350....go from there :)

I'd go with the 350 to no replacement for displacement
mJolnir 01-02-2007, 11:07:16 PM camaro75lt, i dont know if the stock internals would hold that much nitrous.
idlzruf, nice to see someone knows what does mJolnir is.
i am looking to not exeed the $5000 on engine mods, and i want to know all other options before spending all that money.
also if any of you know of a good 350 setup would be great to know, since im new into the V8 stuff and dont understand very well about cams and heads and how to mach them.
Cardinal 01-02-2007, 11:45:30 PM 305s weren't the worst motor GM built (262 and 267 were) but not the best either. There is no substitute for cubic inches. If you can find a 350 at a decent price, that would be the way to go.
mJolnir 01-03-2007, 12:07:56 AM i found some good N/A 305 setup on another thread im, this is the url
http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72668
but still want to know about sc305 setups

305s are cheap cheap engines, plus when you do build a 350, you can build it to handle 200 shot all day long, just transfer all the juice kit over. I think it was hotrod mag that did strap a large shot on a stock 305, they got 20 passes or so out of it before it popped.

yes i was looking at big blocks, but i dont live in the us so going to a junker and buying an old 454 is not an option, if you know where i can buy cheap 454's over the internet i would be glad to check them out
402z28 01-03-2007, 06:06:58 AM By cheap, you mean?
I've actually got a 454 in my garage I was going to use, but I picked up another one so I have a spare. It's just a short block, with 2 pistons pulled. No heads or oil pump. The engine came from one of my suburbans. It would be a good motor for a build up. I'll sell it, but as a core only. It must be built.
Where are you located?
Twisted_Metal 01-03-2007, 10:03:39 AM Here is the best write-up I've found for building a hi-perf 305...

To save yourself some time, scroll to the bottom of the page and find the link for a 400 HP 305 build-up to get an idea of what this takes. OOPS... link moved.

Good Luck!
Cool board name! Thor's Hammer drivin' a 305. ;)

thank you for the URLs i have decided to go with more CI instead of just modding my 305, i will be looking to get a 350 or a BBC, since this car is going to be at the strip almost every weekend i cant let no 4 cilinder walk me, and a 400HP 305 looks pretty maxed out leaving not much room for later mods

Exactly the reason I brought this to your attention.
Your goal will be far easier to attain with a 350 or BBC.
