I wanted to get some opinions here before I dive into buying a engine.
I have a chance to buy a 454 block only. No heads, crank or cam. It has sleeves in two cylinders, stock bore. The block is solid according to our local engine shop guy here who had the block in his shop not long ago . And it has been cleaned. The block is $400.00. Is this too much for a block only?

Honestly - yes.
I paid less than $800 for each of the 454 long blocks I've bought.
As far as sleeving....just depends on if it was just ONE bad cylinder from a blown engine or something. 2 sleeves kinda makes me wonder WTF happened, especially if they're across from each other.
If it was me, I'd pass. Better in the long run to buy a GM crate engine and go from there or some GM take out deal.....than ANYTHING sleeved....
(unless that sleeved block is aluminum and they're all done like that  )

Pass on it, you have no way of knowing how the install was done or why it needed the sleeves.

Seems bare blocks go for almost the same as complete motors here.$400 would be a bit high though.
I have had 2 blocks I had sleeves put in,never bought one that way though.

I'm having a heck of a time finding a good big block in my area. This is the best I have came across in the past few weeks. I've been hearing both pros and cons about sleeved motors....
Thanks for the input

Have you checked out your local and surrounding area machine shops?

First off I dont know how there is any pro assosiated with a partially sleeved motor. Hit up ebay if you want a find a big block. I got my fresh 350 4 bolt from Michigan for $280 shipped on ebay. But tell the person to ship the block through UPS ground, that is if it is a bare block, because UPS actually will, its about the maximum allowed weight. It's a shit load cheaper than freight which is where the real money is spent at.

I sell big block parts to help fund my addiction to my camaros. I sell std bore 2 bolt Mark IV blocks for $250. They are, however, getting harder to find and I probably should raise my price.
