Hey guys,

I have finished the BBC transplant on my 73 Z, the engine is runing and it does sound healty, however, it is running too rich, I have a holey 850 vacum secondaries, I was reading the instructions on how to adjust the carb but I don't think I am following the steps right, this is my story.

The cars firres up and stays running, but it is too rich, the instructions say to adjust the mixtures screw, inwards to lean, outward to richen, well, the screws are almost all the way in but the car still runs rich, please tell me how to adjust this before I go crazy, I'm not much into this carburetor thing, fuel injection seems to work better for me, but I do love my camaro and would like to get it out on the street ASAP, thanks

What makes you tin it's too rich? (Fuel smell in exhaust?)

If you go too lean, you will get a misfire condition which will cause the exhaust to be rich due to unburned fuel.

Is the float height correct?

Sorry, I can't be of more help here... I know squat about Holley carbs.

Yes, every time I fire up the car, the fumes kill just about everything arround the car, I still haven't check the floats, and I'm going to check the fuel preasure toninght.

We were dealing with another carb that started acting "flaky" for another member, and this is the best advice I have seen yet...
Here is a HUGE tip that will set ya back less than $20

HP books "Holley Carburetors, Manifolds & Fuel Injection",

Available at summit, jegs, borders, amazon, hastings, books a million, etc.

The book will pay for itsself with just a few gaskets and power valves. It seems that the most common cause for a Holley to begin acting-up is a scorched power valve.... If the car backfires (sneezes) through the carb, it will screw-up this power valve almost everytime...
Good luck and let us know what you find...

How far open it the throttle? If it is too far open you will uncover to much of the idle slot and the air screw won't work properly.

To adjust the idle mixture screws right you will need a vac gauge hooked up to full vac. Adjust one screw in/out untill you get the max amount of vac as you can.. Then do the other one, etc

Each time trying to get the max amount of vac..

Then go back and try to trim it alittle more to get more vac.

Then turn them 1/16 to 1/8" turn in to drop idle RPM 50 rpm or so

Thanks guys, I'm going to try and hook up a vacum gauge and go from there, thanks for your help.
