View Full Version : New melling oil pump came with spring...why?? badazz81z28 01-13-2005, 03:17:00 PM My new melling oil pump came with a blue spring ,a pin, and a plastic thing. What are they for? rustbucket79 01-13-2005, 03:24:00 PM The blue spring should be a higher tension for more pressure, and the nylon ring slips on the oil pump drive and shaft to lock the 2 together. ------------------ Custom Auto, your source for quality machine work, cores and new parts at competetive pricing right here in British Columbia 1-888-563-4050 A Canadian, EH? I replaced mine with a steel one from Summit.(actually I replaced the whole shaft) ------------------ John Wright onovakind67 01-13-2005, 04:17:00 PM You got the shaft from Summit? 1978LT 01-13-2005, 05:03:00 PM Originally posted by onovakind67: You got the shaft from Summit? LOL good one http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif Damon 01-13-2005, 06:50:00 PM I beleive most Melling HV pumps come with the high pressure (60 PSI) spring already isntalled. I beleive the other one is if you want to REDUCE the pressure down to a stock ~40 PSI. The pin is a replacement/spare that holds the spring in place on the pump if/when you decide to change it. GoldenOne7710 01-13-2005, 07:56:00 PM The Melling M55A (high pressure/standard volume) already has the spring installed. If you have the equivalent to a M55 the the spring can be installed for higher pressure. I don't THINK a M55HV has the spring installed since it's just considered high volume. The nylon oil pump drive is crap. A heavy duty steel one can be bought at Advance Auto for a few dollars. badazz81z28 01-13-2005, 08:30:00 PM I have the M77 standard volume BBC pump the spring is blue. Do I need to swap it?? The nylon thing is crap huh.... This is a factory motor and will probably be torn down in a year or so Damon 01-14-2005, 11:31:00 AM The nylon thing will work just fine for a modest performance application. Just make sure you install it correctly. It's gotta lock into the groove on the oil pump input shaft AND the groove on the oil pump intermediate shaft. Miss on either one of these and you won't like the results. Install the nylon collar onto the oil pump FIRST. Tap it onto the shaft with a small hammer until the collar locks onto the groove. THEN install the intermediate shaft, again tapping on the shaft with a small hammer until it clicks and locks on. |
