2000 Silverado Z71 5.3L Vortec engine. Manual says to use 6 quarts oil. After an oil & filter change the oil does not reggister on the dip stick. It has just a touch on the bottom but it is bone dry in the area that should be showing full. What gives here? I have owned this truck since new and it used to not be like this. Could the dealer have put the wrong dip stick back in it during a service?

Thanks everyone,

That sounds like exactly what has happened. The 5.3 takes 6qt just like you said and even if you swapped from the little tiny filter for the 4WD to the next larger for the 2WD,, it's only making a 1/2 pint diference.
I'm not even going to go into the headaches I've had with the local GM dealer here, (over $5k in warrantee work that was UN-NEEDED) but suffice it to say they told me last week I would have to drop off my 04 and leave it for "3 weeks to 3 months" to fix the speedometer that 'sometimes' sticks at 80mph.

Hey Marv,

I know exactly what you are going through. I have had more than my share of issues with this truck. But it has been doing good for a while now.

Lets see...replacement parts so far

Fuel pumps - 4
Fuel rail sets - 2
Computer - 1
Plugs and wires - I forget (lots)
Fuel filters - 2
Drivers door thingy -1 at piece that moves in and out under the top door hinge.

Probably forgeting a few items, I have had 2 silverados and should have kept the first one. I don't like the current front ends so I am waiting on a new look to come out. Crossing my fingers that I will be able to wait. Glad I bought the 5/75k extended warranty on this one...Whew.

Wife has had 5 blazers and now a Tahoe. very few warranty visits on any of them.

Thanks Marv, I will see if there is a PN# on the dip stick and call the parts dept. to see if it is the correct one. I am betting not.
