View Full Version : performer vs rpm air gap
slo406 01-08-2005, 01:57:00 PM Whats the difference in these manifolds..i was going to go with the super vic but i drove a 3rd gen maro that had a 406/super vic in it and the low end suffered incredibly..i couldt burn out if i wanted to..very slow throttle responce and sluggish...and more wanting a quick car than a fast car.
Mwilson 01-08-2005, 02:06:00 PM I tried a super victor and RPM back to back and the super victor was 2 tenths slower in the 1/8, Now i know just bolting things up and running without retuning for each change is not 100% correct but it felt like the SV knocked the breath out of my motor!

Yea ..thats pretty much the way i felt too..Except that i drove someone else's car.

Those two intakes need two totaly different cam profiles. You can't just swap the intakes for a fair comparison. Besides the super vic's rpm range starts at 3500, so if you dont have a stick or a steep converter with steep gears in the rear your low end will suffer.
If you're comparing the original Performer vs the performer air gap(you didn't mean performer rpm, right?) the look about the same.
slo406 01-09-2005, 09:51:00 AM no i ment the performer rpm..i -mailed edelbrock to see what they'd say and the told me that the performer RPM is perfect for my set up..but a lil better track results the performer air gap will support the higher end breathe better.
Mwilson 01-09-2005, 10:48:00 AM I think there are two main differences in the two
1. Air gap looks cooler!
2. Air gap cost more!

14.22 on the brakes (I expect 13.90's soon)
GetMore 01-09-2005, 11:12:00 AM From the testing I have seen in CHP or Hot Rod or Car Craft the Air Gap will work as well or better. Having the raised runners to keep the air cooler can help.
slo406 01-09-2005, 10:58:00 PM Yea they told me that the cooler/denser air is better for the engine..especially a 406..ill prolly get the air gap rpm perf..just have to wait till i sell my super vic.
night rider 01-10-2005, 02:31:00 AM lets be real on the air gap for a min.
Yeah the idea works..... but wheres any cool air to flow through the space??
Engine bay air can be hotter than your oil temps in some cases. All the heat from the headers, block, rad, fan sucking air through the rad and it heats up as it passes through.
I think the air gap looks cool, neat racey, but thats it!!
I feel a rpm intake with a lifter valley oil baffle installed under the intake will cool the intake more than the air gap design, and make more power
mjoc 01-10-2005, 03:31:00 AM with a 406 I would get a brodix intake and port match it to the heads alot better flow the air gap will be the restricting item for a 406 the volume and velocity in the runners is not ideal for a big small block try calling world products they will be able to help you better

yo forgot something, its also a real pita when you drop a lil srew or washer into that lil valley in the intake, or a little coolant leak from the water neck. Real pain sometimes. What the hell though, wouldnt be fun if it was easy.

-LMAO!..Thats the truth.
mjoc:Arnt all brodix mani's full race super vic style manifolds?
El Guapo Air-gap = marketing gimmick
-Actually i did some research on built 350 (in the article i found) a air gap dropped overall engine oil temps and improved his 60 ft. by 1 tenth...Not dissin ya Just sayin..L8r Guys

Compared to what? A performer RPM? Stock cast manifold? EFI? What was the original setup?
slo406 01-10-2005, 10:06:00 PM No.. compared from a performer to a air gap performer
