hello, Iam asking this question for my step-dad's 66 impala ss.

he has a 327, and put an edelbrock 600 on it, well me and my brother got him the 14 inch black air cleaner with the bowtie and "chevrolet" engraved in it in the orange and matching valve covers. only problem is it hits on the electric choke (would also hit on the fuel line, but we plan on running a 90 degree angled peice to hook the line up to). It only needs to be lifted a little bit for it to work. Has anyone heard of or seen a solution to this?

I know it happened on mine to (then i forgot about it when my bro ordered his xmas gift) which made me get a small little air cleaner that sat up higher (which made me take it off alot to get more air-flow, which probably got alot more dirt in it).

we were thinking of just getting some air ducting about the same size as the carb then making a spacer of sorts.

any thoughts are appreciated!

Nick

You'll need the Edelbrock spacer, #8092 or #8093 to get an Edelbrock air cleaner base to clear an Edelbrock carb. Search Summit for EDL-8092 or EDL-8093.

i would try to go with a flat base. Summit and Jegs sells just the base of the air cleaner. Yours is probably dropped an inch or more.

I went to Advance auto and bought a plastic spacer for $5, mine is about 3/4" high... it clears a drop base air-cleaner no problem.

If you only need a small amount Holley sells a really thick (~3/8") air cdleaner gasket. I've used it several times when I only needed a smidge of clearance around the carb but where hood clearance was tight.

You can heat up the aircleaner base with a torch and try and pound out the clearance with a hammer.

Don't use the 90o fuel fitting. They are a lot more restrictive and should be avoided if possible. A full flow radiused 90o for braided line would be okay.

the 90 degree fitting i was looking at for him was mandrel bent, so it should be ok!

A dropped base air cleaner will sit lower with a spacer, than a flat base air cleaner will sit. I have to use a dropped base on my car. I have a Victor Jr. with a one inch spacer. The back of my hood is propped up about 4" too. I did the old 60s trick and shimmed using long 3/8" bolts and washers. It pulls a lot more cold air in and still closes correctly.
