I don't know much about carbs but can someone show me how the choke is supposed to be hooked up? I have an edelbrock 650 with manual choke and vacuum advance. Is the choke that plate on top that swings back and forth and is there supposed to be a spring on it or something linking it to the gas pedal? When cold I have to crank for like 15-20 seconds on and off to get it to start. The arms that come out on each side of the carb linked to the choke don't have any linkage or anything attached. Can someone post a pic as it would be easier for me to understand? Thanks

there should be a cable you pull from in side the car to close the choke and after a minute or so when the temp etarts rising you open it,
When i get in my car with no choke when its cold ihit the gas pedal once to the floor and she fires right up
What are you doing in the 20 sec:
pumping gas?
nothing at all just turning the key?
Have you checked initial timing? How does it turn over normal, slow

I tried it all. One push to the floor and crank, pumping while I crank, holding the pedal down while I crank. I know there is no linkage to the inside, shouldn't there be something linked to the pedal? No it does not crank hard when I try to start it. Is there a pic somewhere of how this choke is hooked up? Also I "think" I have the thunder series 650 from looking at the pics on the edelbrock website.

How do you check initial timing? I checked it at idle the other day and it was around 15* btdc.

that timming is pretty good i think, as long as its getting gas it should start, Im not very good with E-brock carbs but it kinda sounds like there is no gas in the accelerator pump curcuit after the car sits up? next time its cold get some one to hit the gas and look down in the carb to view gas squirting, turn the motor a few revolutions hit the gas again then repeat until you notice gas squirting inside the carb it may be a lack of fuel issue?
do you run mech/elec fuel pump?
How cold is it where you live?
I may not need a chock because it rarly gets cold here? Try reposting and say "Hard to start E-Brock carb" Is that the "Carter design" or the "Q-Jet design" i've never heard of 650 E-brock?

O.K. I found the number on the carb it is a 1405 which is a performer 600cfm manual choke. I think my problem with starting is there is nothing hooked up to the choke! I saw the cable you were talking about on Summit that I can hook to the dash. It's in a heated garage and still won't start with out all the gas pumping. I'm gonna go tie it closed and trey to start it now that I know where the choke is. Thanks
