Did they make such an animal? If so, what was did it come in? Casting numbers? I'm looking to build a roller stroker and would like to start with a seasoned block like this.

View Full Version : 4-bolt Factory Roller 350? El Guapo 01-03-2005, 05:00:00 PM Did they make such an animal? If so, what was did it come in? Casting numbers? I'm looking to build a roller stroker and would like to start with a seasoned block like this. Lowend 01-03-2005, 05:07:00 PM I don't think there is such a thing. I've never seen a 1-piece rear main block with 4-bolt from the factory El Guapo 01-03-2005, 05:13:00 PM I didn't think so. Darn - mjoc 01-03-2005, 05:32:00 PM I believe the ZZ430 was a roller with 4 bolts but i am not sure. Dirt Reynolds 01-03-2005, 08:15:00 PM Unless I'm mistaken, 4-bolt main 350 truck blocks with the one-piece rear main seal are roller blocks, however, during the late '80s they were fitted with flat-tappet cams unlike the 2-bolt roller block engines in passenger cars which got the hyd roller cams. The Corvette was the only passenger car with the one piece rear main seal, hyd roller cam, and 4-bolt mains. ------------------ 'Silver Bullet' 1977 Z-28 413" SB 11.73 @ 115.10 and dropping... Vettes and truck blocks were the only ones with 4-bolt mains and the truck blocks may not be fully machined for a roller cam bolt-in (lifter bores not machined flat on top to take the 'dog bones', lifter spider bosses may not be drilled/tapped and the block may not be drilled/tapped for the factory cam retaining plate). All that is fixable but would probably cost about the same as just having a 2-bolt block machined for some aftermarket (or factory?) 4-bolt caps. rustbucket79 01-03-2005, 09:49:00 PM Up in my neck of the woods around 20 percent of the new style blocks were 4 bolts and set up for roller cams. Your best bet is to look for a 350 out of a 1 ton van or pickup. ------------------ Custom Auto, your source for quality machine work, cores and new parts at competetive pricing right here in British Columbia 1-888-563-4050 A Canadian, EH? Corvettes had them from '87-91, Camaros/Firebirds had them from '87-92, and almost all truck 350s from '87 and up had roller blocks. Not all trucks used roller lifters, but the blocks were cast and prepped to use roller lifters anyway. I can't remember the casting numbers, but check out www.thirdgen.org (http://www.thirdgen.org) and it shouldn't take long to find them. Air_Adam 01-03-2005, 09:53:00 PM Sorry.... Camaros/Firebirds used the same block as the Corvette, but used 2-bolt mains. The Corvette had 4-bolt mains. 1978LT 01-03-2005, 10:34:00 PM Penix would know. He is always into those engines. (Pssst hey man found me a roller block yet? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif) MEAN_SBC 01-04-2005, 01:58:00 AM My 383 is a one piece rear main 4 bolt block....... So they have to have made one... It's a rather new block... ------------------ Brant 2nd Gen Camaro 10.41@132.3 Need Nitrous???? http://www.rocketworldracing.com MyBoTy 01-04-2005, 09:18:00 AM Plenty of 'em around, just keep looking. El Guapo 01-04-2005, 09:38:00 AM OK, sweet. I'll start at the bone yards with the trucks and vans and see what I come up with. Lowend 01-04-2005, 02:21:00 PM I thought only LT1 vettes got 4-bolt mains. Truth be told it does not really matter. A 2-bolt main is good to about 550HP and that is pretty much the limit for a street car ------------------ 1971 Camaro 383 stroker ~500HP M21 4spd 12" brakes 16x10" Wheels Autocross competitive Sales / Tech - The Speed Merchant, San Jose, CA 1-800-994-0930 mailto:BrettK@speedmerchant.comBrettK@speedmerchant.com</A> http://www.speedmerchant.com/ Blue70SS 01-04-2005, 03:15:00 PM To the best of my knowledge all L98 Corvettes through '91 (last year) came stock with 2-bolt main blocks. If you really want to make it strong find one of these and have it machined for splayed 4-bolt main caps. Dirt Reynolds 01-04-2005, 10:32:00 PM The L98's used in the Corvette are not the same block as used in the L98 f-bodies. F-body L98's are 2-bolt mains. Corvette L98's are all 4-bolt mains. All truck one-piece rear main 350 blocks are 4-bolt mains. Not all truck one-piece rear main 350 blocks used roller cams, but they are roller blocks. Hope that clarifies the issue. ------------------ 'Silver Bullet' 1977 Z-28 413" SB 11.73 @ 115.10 and dropping... Old Vortec combo: 12.15 @ 110.52 1989 GTA L98 Daily driver AJ_72 01-04-2005, 11:54:00 PM I have one. It's a 350, 4-bolt main, 1 pc rms out of a 1990 3/4 ton. The last three in the cast # are 638. Go to www.Mortec.com (http://www.Mortec.com) and look there. You'll see that not all 350 blocks that were 1 pc rms were set up for a roller cam. I don't remember the casting number, but I'm sure if you look there you'll find it. ------------------ 350CID, Vortec 062 heads, Magnum 280, Performer Intake, Holley 650 DP, 3.42 rear w/ Auburn posi, 2600 Stall/TC "Things are more like they are now than they ever were before."
