yeh, I really screwed up. Last summer I was rerunning my remote oil filter lines and when re-installing them I reversed the lines. I have 2 oil gauges, one under the dash, and one on the oil filer base under the hood. When I re-started the engine, I had no oil press. on the gauge inside the car, but 60 on the one on the filter base. Stupidly I drove the car a couple of doors down the street and back thinking the gauge inside must be screwed up. After I corrected the lines, instead of the op (oil press.) being 60, it was around 40 running and barely 30 idling. And the thing vibrated bad. So I thought the driveline was bad, corrected an inbalanced driveshaft but it still vibrated. Rear end was just rebuilt as was the tranny. New ujoints too. New yoke. I re did the carb, and probably put a couple of hundred miles on it trying to get the vibration out, even jumping into it a couple of times through all 4 gears at 6500 rpm. Still it vibrated and seemed to be doggy. But it only vibrated and never knocked or rattled any.

Well I just pulled the motor and found shavings (looks like mostly bearing metal) in the pan and stuck on the oil pump pickup screen. The rod bearings look ok. But I spun one main bearing, but the journal looks good. Cannot feel any grooves although it looks scarred a tiny bit. The rear main bearing looks good but I can feel a tiny groove in that journal though. All the bearings look a bit like they had been sandpapered but the crank journals all felt smooth except for the one I mentioned.

Also, there was a black, tar like, sticky substance on the pickup screen. I had to scrape it off with a knife. Looking down into the block, a couple of the lobes on the cam look dark on the outside edge of the lobe, not where the lifter sat on it. From what I can see of the cyl walls, they all look fine. Hopefully I can save all the hard parts and just replace rings, bearings, have it re-balanced, but am not too sure if I need it re-blueprinted or not. So because of my major brainfart, it looks like a major rebuild although nothing broke, at least. But I still cannot believe that nothing came apart after my f.u., nothing knocked, even after some thrashing.

ok, so let me have it (covers head to protect himself) http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/redface.gif

Any tips I need to remember, besides putting the hoses back on the right way?

Well I was going to leave a post with just the reply of just "dumb@$$" because you asked for it,, but after reading your troubles, I didn't have the heart.
Sounds like all you need is to have the block alignbored (I doubt just a hone is going to correct the damage of a spun main), polish the crank if it's still in spec,,, and unless the remote filter is a necessity of the configurtion,, toss it and put the filter back where it belongs.

What Marv said. If you just slap new bearings into a saddle that had a bearing spin inisde it..... it'll just spin again later. Crank may appear to be smooth but it is likely worn under-sized regardless. Gotta get the crank mic'ed before you'll know for sure.

Don't feel too bad,I did the same thing last year but caught it while priming the engine.
Now that I have the room for a filter I'm doing what Marv said and tossing the remote crap.

I finally got that darned remote setup sealed so am not sure I will get rid of it. That filter hanging right over the header makes oil changes a pita since I like those larger filters. Plus I am running one of those dual oil filter setups now, kind of like that extra filtration. Hoping I can get out of this for $400-$500, but we will see. Whatever it takes to do it right...

I do have the heart: DUMBA$$!!

Seriously, sounds like you caught it in time to save yourself from some serious damage. Chalk it up to experience and move on -

well also found a mushroomed lifter so it looks like the cam is probably smoked too
