hey guys, be patient with me!

I did a search and didnt find anything

but, what i want to know is, is there a specific sequence or way you are suppose to unbolt the heads? I have a chiltions guide, but unfortonately i forgot it at home, which is about an hour and a half away. I am hoping to take the heads off tonight.

Should take the rockers off first, then unbolt the heads right? Iam just being careful, dont want to screw something up.

Thanks

Nick

If you loosen all of the rockers, and then start unbolting the head by undoing the front two bolts, the back two, and then keep alternating front and back until you've got them all out, I don't see you having a problem.

Reverse this sequence if you want.

Imho, it doesn't matter AND if you leave the rockers tight, they will help pull the head up off the two locating dowels!!

Done it "several" times in the past and always worked fine for me.

Just watch that if/when it come's loose, it doesn't slide off the deck and hurt you or something else..

PS., don't forget bolts 14 and 17 b/c they are usually gunked up and down in a recess on each end of the head AND hard to see..

1/2" inpact wrench and a 5/8" socket and rock and roll. No special sequence to take the heads off. Only when putting them on to get the correct gasket squash.

Got them off, just started from the ends and worked to the middle. Used a breaker bar to initally lossen them, then took the impact wrench to make it go alittle faster. here are some pics.

what ya all think? they dont look to horrible to me, more crap on the pistions then i thought there would be. anyways, do you think i should bring the heads to a machine shop and get them hot tanked? I dont want to put to much money in to it right now, but do plan on getting a new cam (stock one in it right now). any suggestions would be appreicated.

guess it all depends on why you pulled the heads and what you plan on doing with the setup.

looks decent for what appears to be a virgin motor.

I just want to add a bit more performance to it, and get it running nice. Figure I might as well check it all out since i have the engine out of the car. Should I bring it in and have the valves cleaned or whatever they do? Or can I do it my self? I am really not to knowledgable about this stuff I guess, but defineately willing to do as much of it myself as possible without having to buy alot of specialty tools.

Yeah, the motor only has around 90,000 miles on it, stock original engine, but who wants that?

I would can the heads and try to get a set of smaller chambered ones say like 64 to 67 cc's along with thinner headgaskets, (like Fel-pro's #1094's at .015" and Mr Gasket shim's at .020"), to up it's compression to like 9.75 to 1 so I could run a 268/270/272/274 cam in her to really pick her up..

I say this b/c I don't think your dished pistons will create much above this so you should be fine for running pump gas..

Hy-cams like;

CC's 268HE, 270 Magnum and XE274;
Crane/Cam Dynamic's 272/272 Energizer and 274GH06 and
Isky's 270 Mega...

For starters.........................

Add a cheap set of 1.625" dia. 4-tube long headers and a free flowing exhaust and go.

And if you don't have a decent carb and intake on it, no more than a Holley 300-36 true high-rise dual plane and their old 3310- 750 cfm vacuum secondary 4-barrel will do nicely IF it clears your hood..

You will have one sweet running MILD street motor, imho..............

Like PDQ said...If you have to reuse those heads get a valve job...You would be better off spending the money on a new set of heads though.. I have a brand new XE274 cam in the box with lifters(never opened) Ill give ya a real good deal on it if your interested.. This cam would work great for your car..
