So i have a 91 trans am and im dropping a 406 in it..i bought a MSD 8.5 wire set for the engine made for the 350 tpi engine that was in it and i dont think its gonna work..should i buy a set for the vehicle that the 400 block came out (72 chevy truck) of or what..or should i be able to make this work.

Seems to me the TPI cap has HEI style terminals on it, those wires will work if the current cap uses the same terminals. If you want to return the wires, I have always preferred the cut to match wire kits so I can run the wires properly and underneath the headers for a clean look and easy valvecover re and re.

About the only time consuming part is making up the wire looms to keep them from hitting the headers. I ended up buying some Accel wire separators and building my own brackets to bolt them to the block. There are 1/4 inch threaded bolt holes near the deck of the block that were originally used for heat shields with stock manifolds.

The build your own sets are the best. They give you 8 wires thats WAY too long, and already has the spark plug end made on to them.
You just route them the way you want to, then cut to lenght. Most sets also comes with a wire stripper and/or crimp tool
My MSD kit cam with a tool that does both. You lay the wire in the tool, against the notch or line, and use a sharp knife/razor to cut most the way through the jacket on the wire.
Then you slip on the right end, lay it in the tool, place top part of tool on, and press together (they say use a vise, I didnt have one, so I just used a C clamp)
Then slip on the boot. (use alittle dish washing stuff inside the boot and on the jacket of the wire) that helps it to slip on easier.
It's not really hard to do, but does take alittle time to get them all cut to lenght and put together. Once done it's well worth the time, cause you have a set of wires that fits just the way you want them too

3rd gen F-body with a small block and headers? Any universal-fit setup with 90* boots for an HEI distributor will work. I use parts store cheapies all the time without a problem. Only real issue is if your particular headers come real close to the plug boots- that's when an aftermarket high temp setup is worth the extra cost.
I'm talking about a FUNCTIONAL setup for minimal bucks here, not a show-winner. If you want it to look really nice and clean a cut-to-fit setup is the only way to go. Won't work any better or make any more power but it will look better.

When I put the Mallroy setup in my Camaro it had the older style female cap and all I had were HEI wire so I too got an Accel 8.0 do-it-yourself kit. The first one was the hardest, by the time I got the the 8th wire it was really easy. I didn't go for the under the header setup, it's right over the valve covers, nice and easy. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
