View Full Version : New, inexpensive aluminum heads
earlysecond 12-21-2004, 08:54:00 PM I rarely post in this section as I am not an expert. Today while hanging around in my local machine shop (which I do way too much) a rep came in to promote some new heads from an Aussie company. Beautiful aluminum small block castings (pretty clean looking) they are pretty much copies of the Edelbrock Victor J series. Again, I am no expert but these looked good. Anyway the best part seemed to be the price. The jobber price (not retail as you probably know) as $255/head for the bare castings with bronze guides. My machinist offerd to order me up a set. The company rep was from Liberty Crank.
On another note and it may be old news. Pro Top Line (New Zeland cylinder head co.) has been bought out by Comp (best known for cams) They are selling much of the residual Pro Top Line stock out at really deep discounted prices before Comp takes over. Looks like a good time to buy heads. Even with fairly expensive valves, springs and stem seals you could be under $700 for new aluminum. Around 625 with a lesser quality head hardware kit.
Thought I would share for what it is worth.

Mousehouse 12-21-2004, 10:32:00 PM Do they offer a pro topline bare aluminum head?
GoldenOne7710 12-21-2004, 10:33:00 PM The Comp thing is news to me. That COULD be a move that will break them or make them richER. I really think it's good that they get into the air flow competition. Comp has already proven they know what it takes to make just about any cylinder head sing. Regardless of what people think about Comp Cam's material, no one can argue that they are some of the best R&D folks in the industry.
gregh 12-21-2004, 11:45:00 PM The Comp Cams/Pro Topline story is fact, here is a press release.

I did not check out the remaining top line stuff in the catalog. It is all close out stuff and I know that there was a bunch of cast iron stuff but not sure about the alumunium.

murat ozsan 12-22-2004, 03:06:00 PM earlysecond,
great tip, definitely interesting. What's the best way to get in touch with these guys?
pdq67 12-22-2004, 11:11:00 PM Check, the Hotrodsusa web site for them, b/c they are selling them out too.
I want a set, but just can't afford them now, AND I know if I wait, they will be gone and I will have to pay more for them b/c if E-brock did buy them, they won't selll them "down the line", jmho...

GoldenOne7710 12-23-2004, 10:31:00 PM I emailed Comp Cams and got a quick reply. The buy out is in it's final stages and they will be reopening RHS (Racing Head Service) which is AWESOME news. They are definately going to give AFR, Dart, Brodix, Ebrock, GMPP, and Trick Flow a run for the money.
pdq67 12-24-2004, 01:47:00 AM Heck, RHS is just a 100 feet across CC's parking lot on Democrat Street in Memphis, TN!! OR at least it was the last time I stopped into both of them, and Lunati's too, when I went through the town a while back...
Guy's, we'ed better buy what's left of Pro-'s inventory up real quick before the cheap prices are gone for good, imho...

Who makes these 'Aussie Heads?' I'm kinda interested because they're local.
Lowend 12-24-2004, 09:27:00 AM They come from a company called ProComp Electronics based out of Melboure. Their US office is in Los Angles, but they don't deal directly with the public.
I have that set of bare CNC ported 210cc heads at the shop I want to get rid of (taking up space) if someone wants a deal

Damon 12-24-2004, 04:20:00 PM Deals too good to be true?
Reminds me of a quote from the Indiana Jones movies:
"Asps. Very dangerous. YOU go first!"
AllGoNoShow 12-24-2004, 04:57:00 PM The way that press release is worded leads me to believe that Comp. is not going to be directly involved in improving/designing the heads, just involved in the marketing strategy standpoint.

If they're 70+cc combustion chambers, I might be able to work out a deal with you.
Lowend 12-27-2004, 01:28:00 PM they are 64cc
burak sözer 12-28-2004, 05:25:00 AM Me and my friend Murat Ozsan, contacted to these guys, they sell bare casting for 500$, valves springs etc. +300$, but not assembled, we have to spend another 100$ for assembly ( infact machine work on the valves), which makes 900$ total, when we compare to Eddy assambled AL heads 950$,its better to look for Edelbrock sale for heads... I didnt compare the flow rates yet but at first sight thats the wiev for us http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
*Polished intake is a great deal also Hei is real cheap http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

The email I got a reply from Comp Cams said they will be VERY involved in R&D of these heads. RHS, who is taking over the operation is owned by Comp Cams. I used to get things from them back in the early 90's then I didn't hear anything from them. Email them at compcams@compcams.com and ask them anything you want to know about. I got a reply the next day and they seem happy to share the news.
f-body 12-29-2004, 11:45:00 PM Oh great another product that will be over priced and join the comp cams conglomerate. I run a CC 280 grind in the small block and ever time I call the tech line I get some smart ass who does not have the time of day for my questions.
I would not run the F.A.S.T efi just because Comp owns them too. I think AccelGenVII or Big Stuff 3 is better any way.
Dam I was looking at those heads well World Products and Darts are about the same price anyway.
Where are the heads for cheap prices before CC takes over???? How much less will these heads be you said $700 for aluminum? I want some.

1978LT 12-30-2004, 06:02:00 AM Larry's Performance is selling an aluminum 190cc intake, 64cc chamber head for $850/set complete. Probably the same deal.
f-body 12-31-2004, 04:38:00 AM think eventually I will just get some World Producs Sportsman II.
hhott71 12-31-2004, 08:55:00 AM step up to Canfields, or Jegs.

So why doesn't Jegs post the flow numbers for their heads?
sikzdrivr 01-01-2005, 06:20:00 PM I remember reading somewhere that the Jegs heads are made by Canfield?
