slo406 12-24-2004, 01:06:00 PM Well, im kinda going a different route with my build and the cam i had bought was for a blower application and i want a cam made for going n/a, heres a couple i was looking at :

*I'm primaryly looking for a fair/mild idle and 2000-6000 rpm range..nothing really lobey but a little would be nice, But still nothing thats gonna stall out out at every light and act like it is.
onovakind67 12-24-2004, 03:05:00 PM We have one of these cams in a 406 Elky that runs very well. Tremendous torque, nice idle, we use it as a dyno mule to test carbs, etc.
Damon 12-24-2004, 04:41:00 PM 400 cubes? N/A? Don't be afraid of the bigger cam. It's not at all like shoving a cam into a little 350. The 400 will swallow a considerably bigger cam than an equivalent 350 and come back asking for more. If you're traction limited (moderate gearing, DRs, a few minor suspension upgrades) you're probably gonna want to knock down the low end torque a bit to help get you out of the hole clean.
Mwilson 12-25-2004, 12:49:00 AM I agree 400 swallows big cam!!!!!!
Stall at stop lights? what converter u runin Stock?
I wouldn't put less than 235 d 480 l 110 lca
in my grandmas car with a 400!
Rick WI 12-25-2004, 02:57:00 AM Your exactly in the ballpark for what you are looking for.
onovakind67 12-25-2004, 03:00:00 AM I've had pretty good luck with 'small' cams in my 406. My tow car has a 224° Comp cam, gets 18 mpg on the road and runs 11.70's in the quarter, 7.50 in the 1/8. When you want to cruise at 2000 rpm with the converter locked and not surge and buck, small is good.
Dirt Reynolds 12-25-2004, 06:53:00 AM I agree with Damon and mwilson, the 400s can take much more camshaft than an equivalently equipped 350. Our heavy 2nd gen Camaro's can really use the 400's huge torque curve, and a bigger cam helps with airflow through this size engine.
If you have a lighter car like onovakind with a 224 deg hyd roller cam, you can get away with less camshaft and still make good power.
My 1977 Z weighs 3725 with me in it, and thats with aluminum heads. The car was even heavier when I ran the Vortec heads. The mildest cam I ran was 234/244 hyd, now I run a 260 deg solid Comp 306S and I still have a ton of bottom and midrange torque. The bigger solid really helped with higher RPM pull at the track.

Mwilson 12-25-2004, 08:44:00 AM Its not hard to run mid low 11's with a mild 400
onovakind67 12-25-2004, 12:20:00 PM If it was that easy, everybody would be doing it. I have a standing offer around the dyno shop for guys that want to race me with their 'street' cars. I will tow your car to LA with my car, we will race upon arrival. Immediately afterwards your car will tow my car to Sacto and we will repeat the race. I haven't met any 11-second guys that can even drive that far, let alone tow another car.
Mwilson 12-25-2004, 03:34:00 PM round here everyone with 406 set of camel humps, 3000 stall and 3.42's runs 11.5's
in any nova-camaro
onovakind67 12-25-2004, 04:27:00 PM Sure thing....Just like anyone around here with a 350 motor ported heads, victor intake , 850 holley , 11.2 comp.,4.10 gear w/spool, 3500 stall runs 10's.
Mwilson 12-25-2004, 04:28:00 PM Man sounds close to my set up im moving there run some tens!
You guys must have a downhill track?
Rhodyman 12-25-2004, 08:51:00 PM I run an XE274 in my mild 406sbc and love it!
onovakind67 12-26-2004, 02:21:00 AM No downhill, but it is a full quarter mile....
Mwilson 12-26-2004, 09:02:00 AM Hey i have to apologize now i realize why my mph is low but my times are fast! we run to the 1000' foot mark here! 11.50 @ 97mph
onovakind67 12-26-2004, 04:48:00 PM If you're at the 1000' mark at 11.5 seconds and he's at the 1320' mark at 11.7 seconds, that's roughly a 280' margin of victory, about 15 car lengths.
Mwilson 12-26-2004, 05:20:00 PM Im just kidding of course we run "full" 1/4 mile here!
onovakind67 12-26-2004, 06:01:00 PM That would explain the 1/8 mile timeslip in the background of your webpage and the 1/8 mile time and speed shown in the Bragging Rights....
Mwilson 12-26-2004, 06:55:00 PM No the 4.10 gears which didnt help at all in the 1/8 mile, and were installed only because my 3.42's were making noise is why my timeslip only goes up to 1/8 mile, soon as i install my new for christmas 3.42's and hoosier DOT stickies ill post some 1/4 mile times. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
Hey we are killing this guys thread!
I dont know what the difference is but the average guy with a 400 runs 11's most 350's run 12-13, street cars only around here.

onovakind67 12-26-2004, 09:00:00 PM It's hard to get a 1/4 mile timeslip from these guys...

Whats it going in?
Might as well change heads and cam,
I pulled one ( a 400 SBC ) out of a suburban once changed cam and intake only with the factory dished pistons and open chamber heads it ran 8.50 1/8 mile in a 1988 camaro with 2800 stall and 3.42 gear</font>
I dont know what the difference is but the average guy with a 400 runs 11's
I'm still here. 8.50 in the eighth translates roughly to 13.30's in the quarter.
Mwilson 12-27-2004, 03:20:00 PM I didnt build the 400, that is strait out of a suburban with intake and cam thats it!
If i were building it it would have some decent heads, flat top pistons, headers
that motor that i was refering to was a 200,000 mile worn out low compression
And as i stated to him change heads and cam as i did not.

Mwilson 12-28-2004, 09:50:00 AM onovakind 230 @ 50 is a mild cam in a 400 in my opinion?
220 @ 50 would give you a powerband suitable for towing in a 400 wouldnt it?
406, camel hump heads, performer RPM cam
2200 stall,3.08 gear my buddy Kevin
71 nova restored original body, interior
ran 7.34 1/8
11.40 1/4
onovakind67 12-28-2004, 10:58:00 AM 230° @ .05" is a reasonably mild cam for a 406, I have a 'buddy' Lenny ( doesn't everyone have a buddy with a car that's a lot faster than theirs? ) who runs 10.50's in his 64 with this cam, 492 heads, 3.50 gears. I guess the average Nova around here runs 10.50's.
Mwilson 12-28-2004, 06:58:00 PM I think onovakinds cam would probrably give him what he's asking for but i dont think hes mentioned what type of car, converter, gear he has?
