You're halfway there. Can you read the number on the block behind the alternator? You may need to get a rag & screwdriver to clean the grime off of the numbers.

There will probably be a partial vin # there and a 3 digit code as well. We're interested in the 3 digit code. That will help us narrow down the application. If the block has been decked, this info could be gone... You can always drop the pan & count the bolts on the caps...

The 4-bolt 010 is the block many people look for as it is supposedly the stronger, high-nickel content, block. There are many here that can give you the specifics better than I can. I'll leave those details to them...

I'm no expert, but this should get you started. Hopefully my info is accurate:

If it is K0516TBC suffix

K0516:
K = McKinnon Engine Plant
05 = May
16 = 16th

Code_Year_CID_HP_BBL_Application:
TBC 1970 350 255 4 convfwd cabs, a/t
TBC 1970 350 255 4 m/t, 3 spd
TBC 1979 350 165 4 conv. cab, m/t,fed

If it is K0516TRC suffix:

Code_Year_CID_HP_BBL_Application:
TRC 1973 350 155 4 fwrd cab

Partial Vin Info:
19J520863
1 = Chevy
9 = year - I'm not sure if this is 69 or 79... anybody know???
J = Janesville, Wisconsin
520863 = partial vin #

While you are at it, pop off a valve cover and get the numbers off of the heads. Hopefully they are something better than 882's!

It sounds like you are about to learn.

Once you have the number, check it out on www.mortec.com under head casting numbers for sbc's. Then, do some research in the archives here on those casting numbers. Good heads do wonders for an engine...

Good luck!
