View Full Version : Good deal? 75K LS1 for $3,300?
AllGoNoShow 11-29-2006, 08:04:47 PM Got a line on a 1998 Z-28. He wants to sell the whole car unfortunately (it has major passenger side damage from tree). It is a 75K LS1 (still starts and runs) and t-56. he wants 3,300 for it. What do you guys think? I may pass on the deal cause i'm too much in debt right now but if anyone lives around rochester, ny let me know and I can give you the info should I pass on it. Thanks.
Nick
3_z28camaro 11-29-2006, 09:32:51 PM For the complete car that price is not too bad. Sometimes engine and transmissions alone can go beyond $3,300. I always thought getting a complete car would be better in a swap because then the buyer can remove the components and make sure everything is the way they want it. Plus you can try to sell off any extra parts and try to recoup some of your money.
76LS1bird 11-29-2006, 09:33:18 PM For a whole car, I think thats a good price.
Theres alot of parts there.

BonzoHansen 11-29-2006, 09:37:57 PM Not bad. You get brakes too. Tuners don't like 98 cars for some reason, and the 98 motor has some issue but I forget what. Maybe problem rod bolts. Go search ls1tech. But I think that is a good price.
When I do my 67, I plan on buying a whole donor vehicle.

Man after my own heart... once owned a '67 RS/SS. 283 2x4 4 spd car. Sold it.. DOH!!!!!
badazz81z28 11-29-2006, 10:37:23 PM That price is not too bad for a severe damaged Z28. I wouldn't think you are getting a bargain on a LS1 though. Keep this in mind....its a V8 Camaro. The baby was not driven by a 90 year old grandma to the grocer every now an then. Most of those 75,000 miles are most likey "fun" miles. The motor and tranny will probably need a overhaul in the near future or maybe best to do if you plan on putting it in a "classic" car.( I hear LS1 rebuilds are pricey) If you part the car you will make a little money but the drivetrain is what most people want. Theres only so much you can sell on the rest of the car and could be time consuming..
IMHO...
Aceshigh 11-29-2006, 10:46:33 PM 75K is alot of miles......especially if it was beat on , which if it's wrecked, it's most likely possible.
IMHO, if it was me.....I'd pass on it unless the interior is worthy of sale parts.
If you don't have the time or the means to rip it apart and sell it piece by piece, don't bother with it.
OldSchoolFormula 11-30-2006, 01:35:38 AM When I bought my parts car it had 64000 miles on it and I paid $4300 for it. 75,000 is NOT a lot of miles on an LS1, whatsoever. I made back a lot of my investment on the front clip of the T/A though at $1050, and parte dthe rest of the car out quite nicely. I kept the door panels and the leather seats and the fuel system, and all the switches, and still made $3175 back on the car. Still have misc. parts lying around too. This is what I made, some parts I made out okay, others I let go waaaaaay too cheap. I just got to the point where I wanted stuff gone and I was not willing to ship anything. I could have made a LOT more money on e-bay. Wish my parts car would have been a 6 speed...
Front Clip $1050
Taillight/rocker/door $220
Front tires $50
Hatch $150
Horns $10
One wheel $90
Front wheels $90
Headliner/visors $120
carpet $50
cd changer$90
deck $30
speakers $10
dash pad filler $60
SeatBelts $40
Front Brakes $250
$60 struts
$60 radiator support
$10 wheel well liner
Master Cylinder/Booster $50
Rear End Rear Springs Rear Shocks Sway Bar Panhard Bar $325
Interior Plastic $90
Dash $150
t-top $120
I say buy it! If you have the complete car, the swap is pretty cheap actually. After all, its a running car right there.

nothing in your list looks all that cheap. i think you made out really well!
Bob78 12-15-2006, 02:00:59 AM Some of the 98's with 6 speeds had bad piston slap. My cousin had a 98 and it got a new engine. The new engine had a worse case of piston slap than the original. They lemon lawed it and he got a good deal on the 99. I bought the 99 with 48,000 or so miles on it, now it has 100,300+ miles and it's still going strong.
ChillPhatCat 12-15-2006, 09:12:58 AM Damn if I had the money I'd buy that thing on the spot for that price... just for a future project. I'd have to see the engine running, but at 75,000 the LS1 has just been broken in.

Slap issues continued through the camaro run.
Burt 12-17-2006, 08:35:19 PM I am looking at a '98 T/A and am wondering if the slap issue was also in the T/A's? I would assume so as I think the engines are identical. Anyone know about this?

Yes, same thing... but it's not that widespread and at 75k you should already know if it's gonna have piston slap. The LS1 is a very stout engine.
a31z28racer1974 12-20-2006, 08:44:52 AM I have read that the '97, and '98 blocks have some oiling problems that were fixed in the '99 block. The '97 and '98 blocks also have perimeter style valve covers. They became center bolt. in '99. They also used larger fuel injectors in the earlier years which required different cpu programming. This limits the options on hand held programmers to Hypertech and Super Chips if you decide that is something you need.
a31z28racer1974 12-20-2006, 08:46:39 AM The piston slap is possible in any of the newer GM engines. More about that can be read at pistonslap.com
