Hello all. I'm brand new to this message board, this is a wonderful and informative group of Camaro nuts. Now to my comment. Is it just me, or are 2nd-Gen Camaro/Firebird owners very loyal to that section of car? I personally owned a '79 Camaro as my first car for 3 years 'till it was stolen. Now I have an '80 Z28. I just couldn't think of buying another kind of car. But it's not just me. I know of three others in my area that have owned multiple 2nd-Gens at one time! Lemme know how all of you feel about it! Thanks!

I am more of a Mopar and pontiac guy since I have had about 8 a-bodies and three Pontiac Convertables.

But I found my Camaro for such a good deal I couldn't pass it up and now am really getting into it. This is my first chevorlet and I can't believe how easy parts are to find, and how inexpensive compared to my mopars and ponchos.

I was going to just sell the car but it has grown on me and will be my daily driver for next summer after I enter it into a few road race challenges.

I'm on my third Second Generation Camaro. The first was a 71 Sport Coupe. The second was/is a 73 TL-RS which I bough new and still own. The third was a 73 LT.

When I was in high school, my bus stop was at a Chevrolet dealership. I can still remember the 70 Ascot blue sport coup in the show room in February 1970. It was the first Camaro the dealership had and I thought it was ugly as sin. After a while the second generation grew on me and I bought one and never looked back.

In the future I may own other cars, but I always plan to have a second generation.

I just love camaros. My 1980 Z28 is the 4th one I have owned. My husband loves Mopars, especially Roadrunners.(he is on his 3 rr now..) Guess you just get what makes you "feel good" about yourself when you are driving it....

I'm still on my first Camaro... a '78 LT Type. I married it in 1982 (yes, 21 years ago). Currently I'm also on my first Mustang, a 2000 GT Drop-top with a 5 speed.

You should hear these two cars trash talk in the garage at night...

I'm faster...
I get better mileage...
You have a carb...
My tops come off...
My Top goes down...

All night.

So now I cover them, even in the garage, just to shut them up.

well lets see i bought my first camaro around 88 and it was a nice driver for 900 bucks off the car lot back then for a 79 305 with headers it ran just past 130 mph before running out of breathe.

tough times with law forced sale ..lol later after getting my act together bought a 1981 camaro that was sweet from the same car lot for 1995.00 and that bad boy had a 350 in it that ran WELL past the 130mph mark. that was Oct. 5th 1990. (still have that car but has transformed toooo many times to count from show car to race car from a 15 sec 1/4 mile to high 10's now....lol.

bought a 78 for my wife but it was short lived she lost interest in it and sold it. it had a dog 305 in it 2bbl that ran 17.80's in the 1/4 with over 130,000 miles on that motor and 2.56 gears with stock exhaust it would top out at 117 mph and it was done out of juice.

bought an 80 z28 in the summer 2002 but it sat til feb 2003 or so when i started on it. and it has taken up alot of my time since its been months since i drove my 81 .....lol

I was born with 2nd Gen loyalty in my blood. My dad would always take me for rides in his '70 RS/Z28 ever since I could remember. Alot of good years with that car and they haven't stopped yet. I vowed to own and learn the ways of 2nd Gen F-Bodies ever since I was a youngin'. I'm 22 now and I've been driving my own 2nd Gen for the past 4 years. It was my first and only car. It keeps me on my toes, keeps me out of trouble and keeps me learning. I don't think I'll ever part with it as my dad would never part with his Camaro. It's a great addiction and I plan on owning many more 2nd Gen's. Their such stylish and potent cars but they can be exspensive from time to time (like any car isn't). It's all worth it in the end though.

My big brother had a plain 70 camaro but it was anything but plain to me. It was yellow and in great condition. But after about 150,000 miles, it looked pretty rough. So he traded it in for a white 76 Trans Am. This was in 78. I just thought it was the coolest thing ever. I graduated high school in 84 and by jan 87, I was ready to become a 2nd gen addict. I bought a white 79 Z28 with blue stripes. It was awesome for 5 years. But I had decided to get married and bought a house. I had a 71 Monte Carlo and the 79. I sold the Camaro to make the down payment. As it turns out I sold the wrong car. I regretted it ever since. For ten years I hated that move. Finally, last september I bought a 78 Z28 that looked exactly like the 79 with the exeption of the spripe package a few minor things. I love it and plan to restore myself when I get my shop built. I can't picture myself without a 2nd gen car. That car is me and is an extension of my personality.

I got hooked on Camaros at an early age. My sister and brother-in-law owned a brand new '68 SS 350 Camaro that was Daytona Yellow with black stripes. Loved taking rides in that car when I was a kid in the '60's. My brother had a '73 Type LT that was green metallic and I remember riding in it too. Its when my brother got a brand new brown metallic '78Z and let me drive it a few times that I got hooked on 2nd Gens and two years later I bought my first and only 2nd Gen Camaro. I have gone through high school and college with this car. I have owned the car for the past 23 years and still counting. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif It has way too much sentimental value for me to ever sell it to anyone. I guess you could say I am a loyal owner. Just my $.02 worth! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

I got my '78LT as my first car a few months ago, and I love the car. I would be keeping this guy for years, except for the fact that it is an automatic. So I am saving up money so I can buy a 70-73 4 speed, hopefully a fixer upper, as I am 18 and dont have the funds for an expensive restored car. I know I can swap my 78 into a manual, but I figure with all the money I would be spending on the transmission, parts, and then a better rear end ( the auto rear end of a 78lt has to be absolutely crappy ), I might as well just get a whole new car, and the 70-73 are awesome in my opinion. I love the cool corvette-style lights of those guys.

My brother had a 1973 with a four speed.I was 10 or so years old and ever since that is what I wanted.I got a 72 in high school and sold it before I left for the Marines and after I got back from Okinawa and got ststioned in San Diego, I bought a 73RS,LT, then I got stationed in 29 palms and found a 70 RS,SS 350 and I still have that one and will keep it till I die so my daughter has something cool to drive. Then I got stationed here in denver, sold the 73 and found a 69 and had that for a few years and sold it to one of the owners of Mile High Muscle car.I knew he would take care of it.My 70 is my daily driver and I also race Sollo II and now I have my eye on a 1980 camaro that is on a blazer chassis with 38's on it.I couldn't see myself without a camaro.Don't know what I would do.

Hi,
Camaros must really be magic. My 1971 Z28 is the first car I have ever owned and I know already that I will never never never sell it. I love it too much =) I planned to buy a Volvo 240 (cheap as hell and reliable) when I started looking for a car but then a friend of mine let me drove his Dodge Charger 1973 (with a 340 magnum) and then I realised I could never buy anything but an american car (I'm from Sweden by the way). I found my 71 after some months and it was way more expensive then I could afford but I could not let it go after hearing that wonderful V8 sound =) I have never regretted bying it even though it has cost me a fortune in parts. If I ever start to think it cost me to much to drive I only need to go out to the driveway and start up the engine then I know I never will be able to sell it =) It's simply a love affair! (and my girlfriend likes it too, she's even decided to buy an american car to even though she want's a pontiac le mans)
Best regards, Oskar

P.S. The best thing of all is that my Mopar friend has no chance beating my Z at the red lights =) He has bougt a 1968 Roadrunner 440 to beat me but it has not been quick enogh yet =) D.S.

I was born in 1959, which means my first car should have been a brand spank'n new 75 (dream on young'n). When I met my brother-in-law for the first time he took me down to his appartment underground parking spot to show me his car (this was 1990). There sat a gold 81 TTop Z28 mint condition. I immediately fell in love, http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/biggrin.gif took advantage of his hard times and bought the car from him for $3000. I still have it today and my kids are eyeball'n it all the time. Guess what kids, http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/tongue.gif I'm gett'n buried in it.

Always have been a GM car guy.Did the SBC Vega and a string of Novas.I wasn't a big 2nd gen fan.I was into Novas,I've had 4, and was looking for one when the 70 came up for sale.I knew the guy and he was kinda on hard times and I got a good deal.Traded some stuff and cash and drove it out from under the tree it had been sitting under for 2 yrs.I'm still finding pine needles.

I am on 2nd gen #4 and my favorite so far. I had a secret love for them when I was 15 and got to drive a 71 Black z28 clone. My husband fell in love with them when he saw a layout of one in a magazine and started dreaming, ironically looked just like the Goodmark camaro. We got married and found out after finding our first one, a 71 in pretty ratty shape, that we had a similar love. It was all downhill from there.

1. 71 sportcoupe, 350, bad tranny, no interior, paid $800 and owned for 1 year
2. 70 RS, 350, T350, smashed quarter panel, original citrus green paint w/ green interior, paid $450 and owned for 1 year
3. 73 sportcoupe, no motor, T400, corvette rally's (had TA snowflake wheels on), polyultraviolet purple w/ silver pearl paint, traded a 68 El Camino for it, 6 months later put a 396 in, 4 engines and 4 years later husband forced me to sell because of hard times
4. 70 sportcoupe #'s matching drivetrain, 307, T350, new black 76 seats and door panels, Viper red w/ black deck stripes, traded a 75 blazer straight across (he was asking $4500 and so was I for the blazer, fair trade I thought). I still have it but it now has a 350 and new exhaust.

I can't believe how much the prices of the 70-73 cars has spiked in just 5 years. When I sold my 73 the prices were still very resonable and I figured that I would be able to buy another in a few years for around $2000 for a nice one (sold mine for $2300 with a perfect body, interior, needing a little engine work...stupid stupid me). When I started watching prices last year and noticed in my 73's condition they were going for $8000, yikes!!! I got lucky and found my current one with an owner who was desperate to unload it before his divorce.

The first 3 camaro's I owned were all under $1000 asking price, good luck finding one running for that price nowadays.

I had to get in on this one! My first car, 16 years ago, was a 1980 yellow Camaro. I sold it about two years later and have missed it ever since. I never felt that way about a car. I used to have dreams at night that I still had that car or dream that I found it and got it back. Anyway my current daily driver is a '99 Camaro SS and I (finally) just bought a 1980 Z that I'm fixing up. Damn, I just love that year and that generation!!!

Well,
I got my '78 by marrying the owner in '82. Still have it. I just decided to NOT sell it. The Original Wife is Looooong gone.

Now my old Fraternity wants to run the car during the Homecoming Wreck Parade in the 'Classic' class.

It gives me a good reason to get those N90's fixed up and get some real rubber on the car.

Well, this is first time on the message board, so, hello all.
I bought my '79 2 years ago from a friend. It has caused me no end of problems in term of finding parts (I'm based in the United Kingdom) and the amount of welding that it demands after having rusted in the most awkward places. However, I love it http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif It runs fines, stops fine, and just looks soooo much better than anything on the roads over here. When it had the original inlet manifold and 2bbl carb, it ran 17.7 down the 1/4, with the 600 Holley and other stuff, it runs 16.5.
And I just can't wait till it's all back together again...

I was approaching my 20th birthday in 1982 and I still didn't have my own car. My brother in law said he just did a valve job on my second cousin's car, a 74 LT, which was for sale. They worked together at an auto parts store. Since the car was in good mechanical shape, I bought it for $1200. It had a white vinyl roof, lots of rust in the usual places. Now it sits in my driveway, the vinyl roof long gone, eight months after the second paint job I put on it. Since I sold my '84 Softail to buy a house (God, I loved that bike), the only way I part with the Camaro is an immediate trade up. Another Camaro, Corvette, or Jag. Otherwise, the 74 LT stays. With all the time, money, and memories in it, I am in no rush to see it go.

I have had a 1971 for the last twelve years and have loved it ever since. My dad bought it new in 1971 and sold it to me in my last year in high school- it was love at first drive! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

My dad then went out and bought another 71 a couple of years later and then he, my brother, and I restored it.

People sometimes ask "what is your dream car if you could pick any car to drive?". I always respond "I'm driving it already!". Honestly, I wouldn't trade my Camaro for the most expensive Ferrari or Mercedes. There's nothing like having built a car yourself to enjoy the pride in your accomplishment while driving it. It's why, even if I bought a car that could run circles around my Camaro, it wouldn't be nearly as fun to drive.

I bought my 78 in Jan. of 79 with 10k miles when I was a senior in High school. It was my first car. I drove it (and wrecked it a couple of times) until MN snow/salt turned it to swiss cheese by 92. I then bought an 80 Berlinetta with a dead engine but decent body and turned the two cars into one.

So, I've had a Camaro for over 26 years. I guess I would call that loyalty.

I'm loyal to my 70Z28RS for the reason that I've owned a lot of muscle cars and I seem to enjoy this one the most because its just different. Besides being an automatic ( which I can drive better because my left leg does'nt work as well as it used to),its not something you see everyday on the road. I,m currently having the bodywork done and rebuilding the engine. Can't wait to get it back on the road again. It's not going to be a trailer queen, it's going to be driven an driven hard!

Well, you are at least tied for the oldest fart title. I was born in 58, too.

I've had my 81 since it was new. It was my first car. After being on the board almost a year, I added a 72 to the stable. I wouldn't think of getting anything else. Well, I did get close on a Mach I last year...

Another tie on the old fart(age),born in 58.

But also boring old fart...purchased a 79 RS Camaro summer of 1982. Still rolls between my garage and driveway. Occasionally goes for a Yomp.
I have only ever been distracted by a 68 RS convertible, which turned out to be a bit more of a dog than I realised.

But then Camaros don't grow on trees in this neck of the woods, or side of the pond.

Personally I am much more of a Ford guy. But I just LOVE the look of 2nd gen Camaro's.

My first car was a 70 Torino wagon.
Followed by a 75 Granada 4-door, later I stuffed a 460 in it. Bent the transmission so it wouldn't start anymore. Too much nitrous I guess.
Also had a 76 Grananda 2-door, 77 Pinto, 78 Fairmont and a 73 Mustang fastback for a while each.

Then I got a front-end damaged 75 Camaro by trading a 83 Mitsubishi for it. Fixed the front end.

I bought the '73 shell from a friend when he abandoned the project. Moved EVERYTHING over from the 75 to the 73 shell. This was in 1992. Been driving it ever since.

He owned it since 86 and did a rather decent job of keeping it running. He was the first one of us to own a car so this was our first taste of freedom. Lots of fond memories.

I remember how each of us was banned from driving it one by one. Vic and I were banned on the same night. We keap chipping the tires. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif Alex’s high-speed antics on prom night earn him his banishment. I couldn’t let him just sell it to a stranger. My first (when I was 15) was a yellow plain '80 Camaro. Four years ago I bought my daily driver. A '99 Camaro SS convertible. Two years later I found what I was looking for for a long time. An '80 Z-28 4-speed with t-tops. Thats my current project car which is coming along just fine.

Well my '99 SS just got stolen a couple of months ago and I couldn't find another like it. So, I decided to upgrade to a 2001 Corvette convertible.

My first car (which I still have) was a dark blue 1980 Sport Coupe w/ a 305 4bbl. and T-Tops. 15 years ago, when I bought it from the original owner, it had 49,500 miles on it. Today, 15 years later, it has 55,500. It spends its life in the garage covered up and is only taken out for the occasional car show and cruise night. As the original owner once told me a few years back: "it looks better than the day I took it home new from the dealership back in 1980." Quite a compliment ... I will never part it!

Well, I was born in 55. So, at 50 I must be in the old fart catagory. I sure don't feel old yet. As for the love of Camaros, mine runs the entire spectrum as you can see by my sig. I do have a preference for my 75 though. I have owned it since 1984.

I've had four second gens and one third gen. My first was a 73 coupe when I turned 15 then I sold it to buy a 73 LT and that car went to Camaro heaven a few yrs later. :-( When I was 17 and had a pretty good job I bought myself a 80 Z28 4spd car that I had for about 4yrs before it when to Camaro heaven.
After the Z I was starting to fall in love with the 3 gen Camaros especially the IROC! I went on a hunt and found myself a 87 with the 5.7 tuned port injected engine, man what a fun car! After about 3yrs with that car I sold it to my boss and bought a 86 Cutlass Supreme that I hot rodded.
Now I am 35 and had the itch to get another Camaro. I bought a 70 RS that I am in the process of doing a complete overhaul on.

I am Camaro addicted,
Greg

Geez, I've been driving 10 years (I'm 27), and I'm on my 4th second gen. My dad, who has owned many GTO's/LeMans'/Tempests since his high school days in the late 60's, took me to look at "some old Camaro for $50" when I was 17. The guy said timing chain broke, he can't get it to run and feared the worst. It was a 78. He heard it crank over, and as soon as he listened to it for a second, he jumped up and said "SOLD!" All it needed brakes, tires, a tuneup, and a missing vacuum hose on the tranny! After towing it home, he looked at me and said, "son, how do you like your first car?"

Drove that for 8 years, 6 as a daily driver. Towards the end, it was getting rusty, needed quarters (ohio winters), and I found a clean 81 6 cyl body. I was gonna transfer all parts over until I scraped off all the undercoating and found the frame looked like swiss cheese even though the quarters were clean. Still made my money back on it in parts.
Then got a real clean 81 Z28 project car, started saving parts for that. A guy I knew through work was trying to sell his 70 Camaro project car, so I went to look at it just for the heck of it. Thought about buying it, but it really sparked my interest in 70-73's, so I looked around til the right deal found me - a 71 RS/SS former 396 car that was very clean other than some surface rust from sitting outside in the hot sun for years oxidizing the paint.

Well, that sums it up. My second gen addiction was sparked merely on coincidence... Good thing I never sprang for the Chrysler Conquest (same as Mitsubishi Starion) down the street for $2500...

Now one of these days I'm gonna have a really sweet street machine if I can ever find the time to finish it. Still just a gigantic pile of parts enough to nearly build a whole new Camaro out of!

Only ever had one Camaro, in fact the only other Camaro I've ever ridden in is Frank A's 99 and Sue A's 91. Never ridden in another 2nd Gen.
My 73 has been a big part of my life for the last 3 years. I've had 2 people ask if I would sell it. No, not at this point, it just can't be bought.

When I bought my 79 Z in 1999, it was just something to keep a motor attached to the wheels. The thing has really grown on me. Almost everyone hates the color (medium green I think, see profile for pic) except me. It's different. It would take a lot for me to get rid of this car.
