ok have a friend of mine that has an 87 chevy pickup, 350 2bbl TBI, over heated like 5+ times, said it was blowing steam when ran and water out of the spark pulg holes, he said the heads are warped my question is is there anyway i can check the block in the vehicle to see if it needs to be decked?? Like using a straight edge or should i just throw another block into it???

Imho, it's not the block deck as much as it is the head decks!

Use a long Machinists rule and say a .001" to .004" feeler gage and after CLEANING the block's deck's good and clean, "feeler" it!!

I think if it is at .003" or above, the decks need to be planed back smooth..

PS., and I have taken a short, 6" or 7" long bastard slanted cut triangle fine and cleaned both my block AND heads CAREFULLY between the head-bolt holes BUT this is a "FEELIE" thing so go from there..

"Old-school" to say the least BUT works fine for me!!
