Getting ready to lay down the carpet and want to lay some wires to the rear for a nice stereo system. Obviously I need 2 speaker wires, but what else should I put in while the carpet is out. I figure an AMP will be in order. Don't want to cut the dash for the head unit. Should I run these by the trans hump or by the door ? THanks.-d

if you think you may ever want to do an amp, run a good sized power cable, a 14 gauge power wire for remote turn on, rca cables and the speaker wires also make sure those wires are 14 gauge or better the sound will be better. run speaker wires, and rca's down the trans hump as far away from power wires as possible, run the power wires (the large one will go to battery eventually) down one side I prefer passenger since it's not used as much

if you don't want to cut your dash for a head unit, i'm not sure how many dual post radios will work well with an amp... meaning, they do not have any preouts...

now, you can run an amp and grab the signal off of the speaker wires coming from the radio, but i've found this tends to make some noise... have you considered a secret audio system?

if you are going to run an amp, place the signal wires (rca cables) on one side of the car, and the power on the other... i like to run them far to the outside of the car, so if i ever want to change anything, i don't have to gut the interior...

Don't run them down the trans hump. If you ever want to change them you will have to remove a seat or two. Run the wires down the sides. If you plan on running a amp and or crossover I would suggest mounting the amp in the trunk.

If you don't want to cut your dash you could install a stock radio for looks and get a remote system. You will have a small head or display mounted somewhere on the dash, console, door, etc & a remote. I use to have a pioneer when they first came out years ago. They are pretty cool and mount just about anywhere. They come with a CD changer and FM module. You can mount them under your seat or in the trunk.

The good thing about stereo equipment is you can be as creative as you want. I always liked having my stereo equipment hidden as much as possible. With 16 speakers in a Beretta it was kind of difficult.

Their is a company that makes a radio that is wireless and you can hide it in the trunk.. run the wires down the side of the seat. but here is what you are going to need to run...
1)Power line
2)Ground wire
3)at least one set of RCA's
4)the speaker wire.
5)remote wire for amp..
6)some spare wires for additional accessories in trunk
7) possibly the control wire for a CD changer..

I wouldn't cut the original dash, but you can find used ones on e-bay fairly often. Get one of those, it may even already be cut, and dye it to match yours. Save the original.

If you are worried about hacking up the dash, you can still get dual-post (or shaft-mount, as they are technically called) radios with RCA preouts for an amp. I have an Alpine shaft-mount cassette deck in my car with RCA outputs, and I think Kenwood also makes a similar unit.

Oh and by the way, Custom Autosound makes a shaft-mount head unit with RCA inputs as well as outputs, meaning you can plug a trunk-mounted CD changer directly into it without an FM modulator. They seem to work better that way IMO, plus without an auxilary controller for the modulator it will be one less thing that you'll have to mount in the car.
