My husband pulled the transmission(automatic) about a month ago to fix a leak. Upon putting it back in, it wouldn't start. Nothing, when you turn the key. The lights and everything work. While it was still up on blocks, he decided to suprise me with a new hurst shift kit. He installed according to the directions. Still will not start. Everything else is working properly.

He has printed the wiring diagrams and traced all the wires. Everything looks good.

What do ya'll think is the problem.

It doesn't turn over or anything.

Thanks

Any suggestions on this?? According to the wiring diagrams everything is hooked up correctly.

You can break a neutral saftey switch... also, it could be shorted as well.

Try those.

definetly sounds like a neutral safety switch issue......
How is it correctly wired?

You know something, i'm having the EXACT same problem.

eightyZ28, when you turn the key, you see two red dash lights correct, one before and after but two when the key is turned correct?

How are these starters supposed to be wired? My book says that there is supposed to be a purple wire down there somewhere and all i see is three red wires, two of which are currently on the same post as the positive battery cable, and the other red wire is on a smaller terminal.

Can somebody please take a look at their starter and tell me/us if this is what they see. Or maybe illustrate a diagram or something because my book is retarded i swear, it doesn't show anything.

I had to drop the starter in order to swap headers and she hasn't worked since, i have all accesories but no crank power. eightyZ28, i assume your husband also had the starter out to work on the tranny.

Is there any way to mess up the neutral safety switch by dropping out the starter?

Thanks for the help,

Renegade.

You can bypass the neutral start switch.

If you have no power after that, maybe you blew a fusible link going down to the starter.Time to break out the test light.

Where is the neutral safety switch? I haven't the slightest idea where it is.

Thanks.

Its inside the car,on the steering column near the firewall. Its a switch with I believe a purple wire and a purple and white wire. Just make a jumper wire and then see if it starts.

Bob,

Should there be a purple wire going straight to the starter? Because all there is is three red ones going to mine.

Did you reinstall the rod from the tranny leg to the steering column??
Grab the column behind the key and turn hard counter-clockwise then try to start it. If this doesn't work, remove the cotterpin and take the rod out of the hole, try twisting the column again and try to start it. H T H

I agree, the most likely cause after a trans swap.

Good news guys, i fixed my problem.

Turns out that i had the wire on the wrong smaller terminal.

There is a bigger post with two small red wires and the battery cable, but then there are 2 smaller posts, one of which has power and the other just sort of sits there (that's interesting). Well, i had the wire on the wrong smaller post, switched it around and she fired right up.

I hope this helps eightyZ28.

I actually didn't remove the trans., my problem was a product of swapping headers, which i had to drop the starter out to do.
