Guys,
I see several A/C questions thrown in here so here's mine....
My 70 has factory air and has been converted from R12 to 134. All the ductwork is in tact and all dampers doors seem to be sealing etc.... The air is plenty cold, but I can't get enough volume of moving air. The high speed circuit is fine, relay works switch is good, fan operates normal, but the volume of air is very lacking.

How hard is it to swap in a blower from a late model vehicle that will throw some air like my 2004 Silverado does? If so, what vehicle could I ask for parts from?

Yes a new motor and blower wheel is available.
I swapped one out on a friends 78 Camaro.
It doubled the air volume (or so it felt that way) over the old motor.

It was from the parts store, 4-seaseons ws the brand.
from O'Rielly's

Also, use a VOM and check the voltage at the blower in Highspeed.
It may be only 11 volts.
The wiring takes a long journey to get to the hi-blower relay.

There are a lot of newer GM motors that are more powerful tan the 70's GM ones. Also check the depth of the wheel opening to mounting depth.
If the stock wheel is a little short, a longer wheel will boost air flow.
Just don't let it rub.

You wouldn't happen to remember what newer vehicle that blower/motor was supposed to fit, do ya?

Yeah, I checked the voltage without the car running and it still had full battery voltage at the relay. I don't remember the exact figure, but at the time I figured it hadn't dropped off enough to hurt the speed. I guess I should've checked it with the alternator running.

It was probably the 4-seasons replacement motor.

S-10, or C-1500 maybe the same (90-92)
The plug in may be different, but easily adapted.

I'm gonna resurrect an oldie here......

hhott71... Is this the blower motor/cage you are referring to?

My blower motor seems to run at the proper speed but there's almost no air coming out of any of the vents anymore. :(
All speeds are working... I can hear four distinct speeds as I flip the selector switch.
It seems like the same problem John had with his.

I think the "squirrel cage" may have come loose from the motor because I started hearing a sporadic rumbling sound.

Since I have to take it apart to determine if it's repairable.... Now would be the perfect time to replace it with a higher output unit.
(A different plug on the end is no big deal.)

I don't have a spare to look at to take measurements.
If someone else could take some measurements and compare them to the description, I would be most grateful!

If anyone has upgraded their blower fan with something that works at least as good as the factory unit... Feel free to chime in with your experience!

Thanks!

<edit>

Nevermind....... I found it at RockAuto (http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1035256,parttype,6916)!

Part # 35334 is a match for an 80 Camaro with A/C.
They also carry the AC Delco replacement but it's 3 times the price.

^That blower fits and works!!!!

The one in my car was from Taiwan. It's been there for almost 20 years.
The fan/cage is much longer on the replcemant than the old one was.
More air flow too! :D
(The wrong one was installed in the decade before I bought the car.)

I was able to get the old one out through the fender well gap but I had to assembled the replacement after putting the motor and cage through the fender well separately.

Thanks for the update Terry.

Sounds like I might have to try that one also!

Mine blows very little air and it is a replacement that I put in 15 years ago when the original died.

Great info :)
