View Full Version : Crank balancing? sandboxbob 03-07-2006, 08:03:09 PM Who does a good job balancing crankshafts in the Phx, Mesa, Chandler, Casa Grande area? and what is the approximate cost to have it done? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! 69SSCamaro 03-08-2006, 01:14:08 PM Is this an aftermarket crank? Because factory cranks use the harmonic balancer and flex plate to balance the crank. but you need to use the ones that came with the engine. sandboxbob 03-08-2006, 02:58:15 PM Yes, this is an aftermarket crank. Even stock cranks should be balanced for high performance use. Here is a great article on balancing. http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/crank-bal-c.htm Marv D 03-09-2006, 08:44:47 AM Bob there is only a couple of places I'd trust. Wilkeys does a good job, as does Basko's engine service. But I still take everything I have done to Larry's Engine and Marine inTucson. Without a doubt the best in the state IMO. They will need your balancer, flexplate, rings, pistons, pins, pin retainers, bearings, rods and crank to do it right. Larry charges $260 to balance a race motor, $120 for a 'standard' balancing (+ heavy metal). dave@ronsraceshop 03-13-2006, 01:00:41 AM I don't think wilkeys does any machine stuf as Bruce who did all the work has moved on to other things so I would check out Klein engines and basko's and beck racing engines I think thier in north phx sandboxbob 03-13-2006, 07:53:03 AM I am headed down to Larry's Engine and Marine this week. They seem to be the cheapest ($160.00) plus any Mallory Metal. I cant believe that as big as this valley is that there is no more Machine shops now than there was 29 years ago when I first came here. Maybe I should get a small business loan and start my own. What do you think? I would give everyone on this site a discount! 69SSCamaro 03-13-2006, 10:31:17 AM I use Frontier engine the guy does some of the best work in the valley. sandboxbob 03-13-2006, 10:48:11 AM Bob over at Frontier told me $210 plus heavy metal. I live about half way between Phoenix and Tucson so I would save about $50.00 going to Tucson. 79CamaroZ28 03-13-2006, 09:08:55 PM Cams (competition automotive machine service) in tempe on rio salado and mcklintock is awesome as far as machine work goes.. I have seen some work come out of there that would blow your mind, he does indexing (very very in depth), and everything.. all work is done in house with the best exuipment.. Im not sure of his price for balancing but its probably the best job you will see in the valley as he is the owner and does all the work himself (so its done the right way).. Tell him Nate sent you.. nate Marv D 03-14-2006, 08:28:59 AM I don't think wilkeys does any machine stuf as Bruce who did all the work has moved on to other things I didn't know that. Bruce was slow as hell but did fantastic work. Shame to see that recourse gone. sandboxbob 03-14-2006, 09:39:16 PM Competition Auto Machine Service wanted $180 and thats if the crank was, I guess pre balanced from Eagle. He said their cranks otherwise are to hard to balance and they take to long. If thats the case it would be around $300.00. What the F_ _ _? Said he would have to see it first. Everyone I talked to said Eagle was one of the easiest to do. I took it to Basko's Engine Service in Gilbert. $140.00 Thank you very much! Marv D 03-15-2006, 06:47:54 PM Don't complain too loud Bob. Built the new motor with an $1200 ultra light 40 pound crank. It was $160 for Larry to balance,, but took 5 slugs of Mallory,, at $90 each. OUCH!!! My 40 pound, $1100 crank is now a LOT heavier,, and ended up costing $1810 (even BIGGER OUCH!) sandboxbob 03-15-2006, 08:40:37 PM Thanks Marv D, I dont feel so bad about the cost after reading that post. It sounds like the ultra light crank was built to make your wallet ultra light. I can think of alot of other four letter words I'd be using besides ouch! |
