Ok, need some help here I am looking in the western South Carolina area- to relocate to from NY area My wife and I thought about Asheville NC area but seems a bit overpriced. So we are looking in the Greenville SC area- any areas to stay away from- don't want to be lost out in the stciks- just a nice area to relocate to and be able to build a 1 bedroom 10 car garage home! Thanks for any info you can pass my way. Ben

It all depends on how far you want to commute. Your best prices for homes with a lot of land are going to be about 20-30min drive from any city. You can cross the whole State in about 3.5-4 hrs. Thats going from Greenville to Charleston.

Also..That would put you less than 1hr from the shop where I'm working on my Camaro..if you located south of Greenville.

Thanks for the reply, we are just starting to look-I have ridden across the state on my motor cycle from myrtle beach to the blue ridge pkwy and back to NY . We like the greenville area- worried about going near the coast-storms-hurricanes etc. what is the weather like in greenville area? We want to be outside of the city- but need to be about 30-40 minutes away from a major airport- as wife works for the airlines-like I said we want to be near things going on not out in the middle of no where- any good car shows- cruise nights?
What are the property taxes like down there? Thanks again

I will let you know when we head down-it will be good to hook up with someone from the area. I have a few questions for you.

I know over on the east coast most homes don't have a basement- do they have them in the greenville area?

Any problems with the fire ants on the west side of SC?

any bad points you can think of about the area? Thanks again for you help

Yes.. My uncle had a house with basement that was an in-law apartment.

Fire ants are generally ALL over the State. Nothing a little chemical warfare won't cure.

any bad points you can think of about the area? Thanks again for you help
The upstate has been growing steadily for many years.. Its really a pretty nice area to live.

Hi Chuck and all, Sorry just getting back -have allot of family matters going on. No I haven't retired yet, just starting to look where we want to go - my left knee is giving me all kinds of problems so they want to replace it soon- that will take me out of the game-I keep pushing it off but the doctor told me its got to be done soon. Believe it or not I am still working full duty- just with a brace on. I can still out run down a perp if necessary- I will just pay for it the next day!!!!

We want to get out of the NY area- its just to crazy and taxes are out of sight! So I like what I see in the Greenville area -nicer weather means the camaro will be out more.Want to get an 70-73 Z with auto trans for my wife.
thanks again for the help.

PS saw my last post it -The word was dispensation- don't know where the hell I got that other word from!!!!!!!!!!!!- Only excuse I can give is I worked the night shift the day before!-no the sun was in my eyes - no I didn't do it- I wasn't me it was somebody who looked like me.! Those other cars were going faster than me! These are some of the excuses I get at work everyday!

Come on down, I've lived in the Greer SC area all my life. I live in Lyman now(next town east). The Greenville/Spartanburg international airport is in Greer. We may have one or two "winter weather" events a year. We rarely get snow, most of the time it's freezing rain/sleet. You'll want to get with one of the larger real estate companies down here. Check out http://www.cdanjoyner.com and http://www.joyrealestate.com These are probably the largest two in the Greenville area. As far as the basement goes, it mostly depends on the lot the house is built on. They won't put a basement in unless the lot is sloped. There are a lot of northern transplants in the area, most of them live on Greenville's east side. Greer Dragway is open from March til Thanksgiving. It's an 1/8 mile track. Wareshoals Dragway is about 15min from Greenville (depends on what part of Greenville you are in.) It's also 1/8th mile. The Atlanta dragway is about a hour away it's 1/4 mile. A lot of the local restaurants have cruise-ins on Saturday nights from March til November. If ya'll move down you have to take the annual pilgrimage to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in April and September for the Grand Run. The whole town is a Cruise-In for the weekend.
