View Full Version : tbi in non tbi vehicles
shawn81z 02-25-2006, 06:21:10 PM Hey folks,
I know this isnt "modern", but i was just wondering where i can find some info on installing a tbi engine in something that was originally carbed, or if anybody has some info they would like to share. I am interested mainly in fuel delivery and wiring. Thanks.
EvolGrinZ 02-25-2006, 06:35:24 PM What do you mean with TBI?
I only know TDI......

Throtle Body Injection ;)
try Jim at http://www.jimsperformance.com/
Also down load Ultim8z's EFI guide. There is lots of good info there. I did a TPI swap and a lot of the stuff you'll run into will be the same feel free to ask anything specific. The swap should be fairly easy.
patgizz 02-25-2006, 07:14:41 PM TBI is relatively simple. only needing 9-13psi to run helps. i'm sure you could modify a stock harness to work with a swap, or else harnesses are on ebay quite a bit that are basically a 2 wire hookup.
EvolGrinZ 02-25-2006, 07:16:45 PM I'm feeling a noob here.....whats tpi? Throttle Power Injection or something?
And could you explain those 2 terms a bit more?
GetMore 02-25-2006, 08:21:23 PM TBI: Throttle Body Injection (More or less an electronic carb.)
TPI: Tuned Port Injection (A version of Multi-port Fuel Injection with long "tuned" runners that optimizes low-end power.)
TDI: Turbo Direct Injection also Tuned Direct Injection also Turbo Diesel, Impressive (Okay, so I made the last one up and the second one was only for one year or so.)
BonzoHansen 02-25-2006, 08:23:09 PM Holley makes a pretty nice TBI setup, from what I have read. You can use your 4bbl manifold.
GoldenOne7710 02-25-2006, 11:18:25 PM I've done this project more than once. What would you like to know? You grab a computer from a TBI equipped vehicle. You decide on your compression, cam profile, exhaust, and vehicle use. Do you want to go fast, kinda fast, or HOLY SHIT fast? I can point you in any direction you want to go.

Thanks for the explanation, makes clear now :)
And btw, TDI does excists.
I have a Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDI and its a diesel engine.
ligtag 02-26-2006, 10:52:35 AM I have a complete GM TBI set-up that I had installed on my 79 and changed out to a LT-1 motor instead. I have everything including the fuel pump and wiring harness. I have a couple of computers and extra chips. Most importantly I have collected a complete manual on all the to-do's. Email me for more info. Thanks Ligtag
1978LT 02-26-2006, 12:06:45 PM I wouldn't fool with TBI. Go TPI!! Lotsa extra low end and midrange power ;):) A TBI is basically a carb that atomizes the fuel more. With a TPI you would be changing the whole manifold and have an injector for each cylinder.
verhoeve 02-26-2006, 12:21:54 PM I've got 2 GM TBI's mounted on an Edelbrock Street Tunnel Ram on my 396. I'm counting on Lance from F.A.S.T. for some tuning advice once I get it fired along with my local dyno operator. With a 6 speed and 4:56 gears I hope it works well.
Mizzouri 02-26-2006, 01:26:48 PM Does TBI have an RPM limit like the stock TPI units did? I've been toying with either putting an FI unit on my current 350 or getting an LT1. Need some advice for sure.

verhoeve, that sounds cool. Top end & it might idle half decent! Cool.
verhoeve 02-26-2006, 11:07:05 PM I put a mild Speed Pro roller cam in it to help keep the vacuum high for the map sensor.Talked to Tom Miller at Turbo City today about a custom harness. Nice guy to talk to. Here's what were looking at:

Kamikaze 03-11-2006, 12:16:07 PM I second what Verhove said.
Talk to Tom Miller at Turbo City!
They've been doing TBI conversions to carbed engines and have used adapter plates to mount the TBI to standard quad or Holley intakes.
They have harnesses, stand-alone computers, etc to make the swap.
For a daily driver that's mild or stock performance, it's hard to beat the driveability of the TBI!
GetMore 03-11-2006, 02:17:47 PM Barry Grant had a really nice TBI unit-it was a Holley with injectors in place of the metering blocks. Carbs do a much better job of atomizing fuel than the injectors in a TBI.
EvolGrinZ, I've got a Passat TDI. Of course it only gets 56 mpg. I'll bet the Seat does considerably better.
verhoeve 03-12-2006, 12:49:13 PM Carbs do a much better job of atomizing fuel than the injectors in a TBI.
Huh? If that were true they wouldn't have went to TBI for better fuel economy. It certainly cost more than a carburetor so it wasn't a cost factor.
Please explain.
GetMore 03-12-2006, 05:14:04 PM Better mixture quality.
The venturi in a carb will do a much better job or atomizing fuel than a large injector with low fuel pressures.
Multipoint fuel injection, on the other hand, does do a good job of atomization. I'm not sure it does better than the venturi, but by injecting fuel on the intake valve it does make the fuel evaporate.
