I have a 1979 z28...I'm in the final stages of the restro..but I cant find the tach..I recall ten years ago of having a tach filter on the firewall but its gone now...I need to know what color the wire is and where it comes out of the firewall or what color the wire is under the dash so I could maybe run a new one from the dist...I have checked out the wire diagram on this site but still couldnt find it..thanks for the help in advance

These two diagrams should give you the info you need...
Printed Circuit U14 (http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/wire/76w-rear.jpg)
Instruments & Dash (http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/wire/76w-int2.jpg)
Notice that the plugs are different for the two clusters shown. Circuit 121 is the one you need to find.
(Looks like it should be a brown wire.)

If your car came with a U14 (Gauge) cluster as a Z28 most likely would have... There should be a brown wire as part of the 12 pin plug that connects to the back of the cluster.
That brown wire is the one you need to trace.
(It could plug into another harness and change color, I'm not sure about that though.)

In my '78, the wire is brown. The wire comes out of the distributor, and has that barrel shaped filter soldered to it, then continues to a plastic spade connector. A second wire connects to the spade connector, and goes through a grommet in the fire wall, then to the tach. The filter is screwed to the firewall with a single screw.
