View Full Version : Mystery wires URGENT want to start tonight
Darknight 01-03-2006, 04:02:35 PM I have a group of wires bunched together that i have no clue where they go. Two reds with circle tabs on them, a blueish green with female connector (problably oil dummy light), a female connect with one prong and two recess, and a cut yellow wire.
Right now they are not hooked up to anything.
To starter i hooked up positive cable to center, and there was a yellow and black hooked together that i believe came off it, i put that on the s terminal. to distributor i ran a wire from fuse box, and electric choke i tied into windshield wiper motor.
none of the diagrams i look at help. some show a black and yellow going to starter, but do i have the right ones?
wires to allternator i know i am right, had a picture for that.
schitzo 01-03-2006, 04:15:16 PM Might help to know what year your car is and if those mistery wires are under the hood.(Engine harness section)
Darknight 01-03-2006, 05:49:50 PM yes they are under hood, run along to the left side of engine bay. just tried to start car. battery has charge, but nothing happens, not even a click, no power to lights either. positive is going to starter center post, negative is ground to chassis. what do i look for?
schitzo 01-03-2006, 08:12:28 PM More info will get you the help you need. Since the batt has charge, use a test light or meter to make sure you have voltage at the starter. As for the S terminal, the purple wire from the neural safety switch should go there According to my 71 wiring diagram, the yellow wire ran from the R terminal to the coil. Also check your fuses, grounds and ensure there is not shot somewhere.
Hope this points you in the right direction
dgwar 01-03-2006, 09:47:07 PM Battery cable to big bolt on starter and there should be another 10 guage wire on that same lug(mine is red) that is your main accessory feed wire. There may be another depending on year.
hook that up 1st. verify that you have power to lights.
turn key to ON test the 2 wires with tabs for voltage the one with voltrage goes ti the " I " terminal on starter. the other one goes to " S " terminal.
Darknight 01-03-2006, 10:31:01 PM alright guys, that bunch of wires were running to starter. the big red went to center on starter, and bam i got lights and ignition, the smaller one was i guess the neutral switch and ignition, the two caps i still dont know, but one i am sure was for oil dummy light, other might have been temp for all i know. it was a six cylinder, maybe the temp was in the manifold, beats me. anyways, bought an 80 battery i might not have need with 1000 cranking amps. turns over fine, aint starting....moving my pissed off mood to engine topic.
dustypowers 01-04-2006, 07:28:07 PM so u got it to start yes
78LT383 01-06-2006, 10:05:35 PM Can you take a picture of the wires? I'd be glad to try to help you out. You can email it if you want to, or would be better to post them here so all can see.
Darknight 01-07-2006, 09:38:59 AM 78LT, I figured out the large, pink red one was my main ignition one. the black one with o connection next to it went to the s terminal. i think the yellow and black i had hooked to starter original came off the coil on the old points system. now i only have a yellow one on the big harness that i dont know where it goes. the two clip connectors were temp and oil dummy gauges. thats the only thing they couldve been. if you could tell me how to post a pic i would gladly do so. i am trying to build a site at cardomain to show the cars history to this point
78LT383 01-07-2006, 12:49:12 PM It sounds like you have the majority figured out. What you're describing sounds about right.
If you have an image posted on cardomain, copy the URL of the image (the internet address that would have to be posted in the address bar of your browser to view the image) with your computer. I think the image will have to be available on cardomain or somewhere similar in order to get it to show up directly on this forum. When you post your reply to this thread, click the little yellow icon that looks like a small picture, paste the URL into the little window that pops up, and click OK.
That should do it!
