Anyone here know how the rear bumper cover fastens on a 79 Z? I am trying to re-assemble one that I didn't take apart and am wondering if it is help in place with the plastic christmas trees or it is bolted in place. Thanks........Rich

On my 79z the rear bumper cover was riveted to the bumper reinforcement. Hope this helps

Its secured by 20 or so rivits. I suggest you install the bumper than put the cover on.
good luck

I tried to respond to this earlier but I forgot my password. I had just done this very task on my 79Z. The cover is riveted to the bumper. It was originally, and you can easily duplicate that. I used wide disk, 3/16" by 1/4"(length) pop rivets. The cover uses seven on top, six on the bottom. I agree with Badazz it is better to attach the cover with the bumper attached to the car-cover cant distort in any way. Also, use a contractors grade riveter, believe me, all the rest are a pile of crap. Also there is a spacer that goes between the bumper and the cover, which is also riveted (4 rivets) to the bumper. I disassembled mine because the bumper was a rusting hulk. You didnt mention, but I'd grind and repaint the bumper with POR before reassembling. Since I am in the process of repainting my car, I am removing my newly painted bumper with the reattached newly painted cover for safe storage until the rest of the car is repainted. Good luck!
