View Full Version : Reverse Lockout Interchange
CamarosRus 12-27-2002, 09:04:00 PM Can members reading this with knowledge of or access to 74-81 Camaros please help via pictures or part #'s (your assy manuals) determine if the pivot mechanism and rod coming from steering column is indeed common from 70-81. We already know that lower (horizontal ) rod is only common in 70-74 Muncie equipped Camaros.......thanks, Chuck

CamarosRus 12-28-2002, 01:09:00 AM Mike, Not that ANY of this reverse lockout stuff is growing on trees, its nice to know that 70-73 guys can look for other years as well....I had always thought that the 75 amd up lower rod was different and would not fit.....Did it fall right into place or did you bend or tweak it......ANYBODY else with comments PLEASE.......thanks, Chuck
camaronutz 12-28-2002, 05:28:00 AM sorry, not the same. the late setup may work the same, and bolt up the same, but visually, its different if you are looking for "correct". im talking about the swivel part that mounts to the frame. not sure what year it changed, but ive got one off of a 78, and it is different for sure.

THNDER 12-29-2002, 01:02:00 AM i cannot tell you if the lower rod differs in appearance, but it did work, without any alteration. i did'nt have any thing to compare it to. it all bolted up and works perfectly. the swivel part is identical to the swivel on my 70' ss350 survivor.

79ZED 12-29-2002, 08:58:00 AM Chuck, I had a look through my 79 assembly manual. They used three different upper rods from the steering column to the frame swivel on 77-81 cars depending on transmission. The autos used part #3976530. The three and four speed Saginaws used #473065, and the 4 speed Borg Warners used #473067. The upper pivot at the steering column apears to be the same for all transmissions, but the lower pivot was entirely different for the autos versus manual trans. If needed, I can check for the part number for the column pivot or other parts in the backdrive in my GM parts book, 77-81.

CamarosRus 12-29-2002, 12:43:00 PM I have a "Models Thru 1975" Illistrated and Parts Catologs....two different catologs....the effective dates on these catolgs are April 1983.....Can you please send me GROUP #'s so I can look up and try to find what your talking about....Chuck
79ZED 12-29-2002, 04:13:00 PM Chuck,
The group # for the auto is 4.035 in the Group 4.0 Automatic Transmission Section, then under ROD, TRANSMISSION CONTROL, it's listed as 3976530 - F,LOCK.
For the Manual Transmissions Group 4.0 look under 4.035 Synchromesh Transmission. The part number is 473065 F/W M15, M20 - SAGINAW - UPPER.
And under 3975624 F/W M21 - WARNER - UPPER.
IST DESIGN
And 473067 F/W M21 - WARNER - 2ND DESIGN
I noticed in the parts book that there were two designs for the rod. The 77-78 Z28's didn't use a lower A arm brace, but the 79-81 did. The first design part might be the one to go for if its needed for an earlier 2nd gen F-body.
If you can't find it easily in your parts book, try the above numbers in your parts number index in the back, this will lead you to the correct group.
