a bit off topic, but why did all Z's come with smog pumps[70-74], but not all SS's LT's and sport coupes?

just wondering.

I would assume the high overlap cam was pretty dirty and the air pump would have cleaned this up some?

Hey Brian!!

yes, that Z28 I sold you 12 years ago is finally going to see the light of day agian . . . soon I hope!!

Since I bought that car from the original owner, and it didn't have the smog stuff there, maybe he took it off?? Maybe it didn't have it?? (but everyone says it should but what do they know. hahaha)

I will continue to try to track the owner down.
Keep me posted on your progress. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well I do know it as a fact that all 1970-1974 Z28's regardless of them going to California or Canada or anywhere else in the world came with a Smog System. You can take that one to the Bank....

I'm with Bob R...ALL 70-74 Z28s came with smog pump. The original owner of my 70' Z28 told me he basicly drove the car home from the dealer, and threw the manifolds and smog stuff in the trash.(i have been guilty of this myself, now i'm buying back the stuff i thought was crap, and now consider it GOLD.)

IF my memory serves me correctly . . . back in 1973 when I was 11, my dad could go down to the dealer and order whatever car with just about any option he wanted . . . dealers could and did modify cars to there liking . . . or to the buyers liking.

never say ALL, EVERY, or NEVER when it comes to cars from the late 60s and early 70s.

IT just ain't right. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
But you can say "With a high amount of probability" or "appears that none" or "has never been shown to, verified, proven", etc.

But I will say that it is highly probable that you guys are right about this one.

That is correct Tim, the dealer could modify, add, delete or whatever the customer wanted to a certain degree. However when it rolled off the Assembly Line, all 1970-1974 Z28's came with a Smog System. If the Dealer took it off it makes no difference. It still came with it. And in this case I will say the dreaded "never" word. They "Never" came without the Smog System....

O.K. The search is on for smog parts, Thanks for the information to all who took time to reply.

I have some smog parts now, don't know date codes ect, but will start research soon.

Thanks again, Brian.

Is anyone doing decent restorations of the smog parts anymore? ASL used to be the place, but has anyone stepped in and filled that void? I need to get my stuff redone.

BTW- is Don Dorfman (from ASL) ever going to resurface and do this stuff again? Anybody on the board know him?

Thanks!
Joey

Joey,

You and I are in the same boat to some degree. I need some Smog Stuff Restored and ASL was the place as you well know. Dorfman and his wife divorced and last I heard he moved back to Seattle to work for Boeing.

I am sure someone else can do the same level of restoration. Have you tried contacting Bill Hodel yet? He has done excellent work for me and I need to call him myself. I need my smog tubes re-done as well as a few other things.

If you need his number let me know. He advertises in Hemmings.

I talked to Don Dorfman well over a year ago at Boeing, but with all the misc layoffs I have no idea if hes still there or not. If it really matters I could try to contact him, but I dont think hes in a position to do much as all the tooling and equip went with his ex wife Marilyn. He did rivet in my top NOS ball joints which is very hard to get done else where. I dont think its all that hard to restore the aluminum appearance on a divertor valve or smog pump, BUT ASL had away to open up the swedging on the yellow zinc or cad 2 colored portion of a divertor replate it and then put it back together.........That would be great if someone could do that again....Has anybody had Excellent results with the Esatwood yellow zinc paint stuff or carb coloring paint......Also after looking at some early take off 71 Z smog tubes I still cant accurately say what the COATING is.....does anybody here have a REAL idea what it is....
Manganese Phosphate or "paint" ?????????

Chuck and Bob-

Thanks for the input guys! I'm not at the point in my project that the car's just sitting there waiting for a restored smog pump to be complete (by any stretch!!), and I guess I ought to just kick back and worry about that when I actually need it. I'm just kinda concerned since I knew that was something that would be tough to get done unless somebody was out there that I didn't know about.

Jerry MacNeish has started doing a lot of the other parts and processes, but he doesn't do the smog stuff from what I can tell. I've heard good things about his work, but I've never used him myself.

Thanks Bob for the lead on Bill Hodel- I'll check my Hemming's and if I can't find him I'll give you a holler.

Chuck- my 71 car is a September build- I'll look at the tubes and scratch my head some....
