About 7 or 8 years ago I bought a matched pair of used 1970 Camaro SS & Z28 tailpipes with chrome plated ends at the Carlisle swap meet. The previous owner had painted the plain steel part of each tailpipe gray after cutting the pipes from the muffler. According to my 1970 and later Chevrolet parts catalogs the GM part numbers are 3984569 (LH) and 3984570 (RH). These tailpipes were only used on 1970 models.

Last week I purchased a NOS 3984558 tailpipe on Ebay. This tailpipe was used only on 1970 Camaro models w/6 cyl., 307, and 350 w/2BC engines on the right side. An invoice (sealed in plastic) to Watkins Motors Inc. of Tower City, PA, dated March 14, 1973, was attached to the tailpipe (which I removed). The muffler end of this tailpipe is stamped "3984558".

Enclosed in the imgur link below are more photos of the tailpipes.

Having seen original tailpipes, I'm thinking that the gray "painted" steel pipe might be factory......

Mine are not gray. These came off a 70 Z28 in 1970.

If you already own an original set of 1970 SS/Z28 tailpipes as well as a NOS 1970 Camaro base model tailpipe then you should ignore this thread. Did you look at the other photos in the imgur link?

My purpose was to compare the pipes as these tailpipes as they were a one year deal and are hard to find.

Chuck,

The pipes that I bought at the Carlisle swap meet were painted gray to cover up the surface rust.

Mark,

Since your 70 Z28 tailpipes were removed in 1970 they are practically NOS. You can still see the "seam" on the non-chromed part. I assume that they were welded to the muffler and had to be cut off.

I also have two sets of reproduction chrome tipped Camaro tailpipes in my garage that I bought at swap meets for real cheap money ($25/set). One set does not have the welded on brackets (for 67-69 Camaro models???) while the other set is similar but not exactly the same as the original 70 SS/Z28 tailpipes.

DaveMy original set is long gone...I bought a set off a member here several years ago with the intention of using them when I replace my current Midas set.

I'll dig them out and post some pics of them in a few days.

Saw a set of NOS pipes on Ebay a year or so ago, went for about a thousand dollars. I'm surprised someone isn't making repops. I'd go for a pair myself.

Gardner Exhaust Systems from Red Hook, NY, sells 1970 SS/Z28 reproduction tailpipes. There is a photo on their website. I have no idea about price or quality.

Gardner offers an exceptional exhaust system that is as close to original as you can get but I don't think you can purchase just the tail pipes by themselves.

Joey Gray makes and sells the whole repro tailpipe and transverse muffler system for 1970-1974 Z28's. It has the crinkles on the pipes and chrome on the tailpipes finish. I purchased a system from him for my 74 Z28 a few months ago and it looks awesome. I have not installed it yet.

Please contact him to see if he will sell only the rear chrome tailpipes.

This Joey Gray's email address and phone number:

He is located in Clemmons, North Carolina.

Back in the early 80's I bought 3 tailpipes from Baierl Chevrolet in Wexford, PA. I put 2 on my 72 and put the extra in the attic. I still have the extra, however the entire pipe is chrome as were the other 2. Was this a later substitution or did the dealer have some non-OEM pipes?

In 71 the tail pipes were all chrome and the tail end was bent inward.

FWIW. I have a pair of original pipes that were cut off of Randy's low mile Z. If someone wants them for reference I'll dump them in the mail for the price of shipping. Otherwise into the trash.

They must be far gone and rusted if they're going into the trash.

Not rusted at all. Just cut where its not a complete pipe that can be reused. I see them as more of a souvenir than anything else.
