View Full Version : 4sp Shift Knob
fvdillon 07-12-2002, 02:14:00 AM When I was recently at the camaro superfest the judge was not going to let me go in the stock class because he said my shifter knob was not correct. I have a 72 Z-28 with an M-21. The knob is white with black #'s. What do you guys think? It sure looks original.

mulsane71z 07-12-2002, 08:12:00 AM Do you have a console? It makes a difference.
fvdillon 07-12-2002, 08:18:00 AM No console
Twox48 07-12-2002, 08:44:00 AM Good question... I have been wondering this myself for a couple years and never asked anyone! I have a 71 Z w/ M22 & with console. It has a chrome ball on the orig Hurst shifter.
What is it supposed to be? I'd love to know!
Bob R 07-12-2002, 09:50:00 AM fvdillon,
Sounds like the Judge knows his stuff. Actually he is correct. 1972-1981 Camaro's came with a ITM Shifter. It had a different knob than the years prior. Should be Black, Eliptical Shaped (kind of like a Diamond) and have the shift pattern on the top with "Lift" for Reverse on it.
They are hard to find. I have seen them on Ebay every now and then. I can send you a picture of one if need be. Let me know.
Prior to 1972 there was a difference on the knobs depending if the car had a console or not. 1972 on up they were the same, regardless if the car had a console.

Psychohamster 07-12-2002, 11:05:00 AM This may be a stab in the dark, but GM was utilizing some interior parts from the Vega line and were incorporated into the Camaro at that time. Maybe investigate a Vega knob. Just a thought.
hmbldr 07-12-2002, 12:51:00 PM Hey Bob, What about 70-71's with and without consoles, what knobs did they have?
Mark
DONNIE 07-12-2002, 04:03:00 PM 70 and 71 with console chrome ball.

fvdillon 07-12-2002, 06:09:00 PM Bob could you send me a picture? Sounds like I'll have a tough time finding one. You know mine doesn't say lift on it, even though you have to for reverse.

dml1968 07-12-2002, 11:03:00 PM F.Y.I. 70-71 only had chrome if you have deluxe interior with a console and all white with no shift pattern for standard interior. non- consoled cars had the pattern in the knob and were the 2 piece black.
P.S. anyone know where I can get the all white knob???????
mulsane71z 07-12-2002, 11:08:00 PM WOW!
With Console - Two piece black and chrome.
Without Console - One piece black with white shift pattern.
The ball has nothing to do with the interior option of the car........
THNDER 07-13-2002, 12:27:00 AM Dale, you may be onto something. all my 70' 4 spd cars have deluxe int. so i thought they all got crome knobs w/console. i did see, and have photos of a concourse retored 70' Z28 with console and std. int. It has a plain white knob. all this time i was thinking this was incorrect, but now i'm not so sure. anyone else?

Bob R 07-13-2002, 02:16:00 PM fvdillon,
Hope this answered your question. I will send you a picture of my shift knob tonight. I am having PC problems again from this Lightning Strike I took last April. You can go to my home page and see basically what it looks like. I will however send a couple of close up photos.
hmbldr, I hope your question was answered as well. That is what I like about this site, you can get tons of data that were previously unknown to but a few.
We "Anals" have to stick together.

fvdillon 07-13-2002, 06:50:00 PM Bob R, and everyone else, thank you for all your help. Now it looks like the biggest problem will be finding one? Does anyone know the part number of this shifter knob?

Bob R 07-18-2002, 07:53:00 PM fvdillon,
You have mail in about 3 minutes.
Bob R
Bob R 07-18-2002, 07:55:00 PM Rick,
Your part numbers are correct I believe, however the early part number was superceded by the 357703 Number.
Bob R
79ZED 07-18-2002, 08:12:00 PM Part #357703 is what I found for the 77-81 Z28 with M21. From the description that Bob and others have given, it's the same knob thats on my Z, and the same as the early 2nd gen cars.

Bob R 07-18-2002, 11:12:00 PM Might try putting an add in the Swapmeet Section. Someone might have one laying around

jarit 07-19-2002, 02:19:00 AM Gentlemen;
Was there a difference between 70-71Z and 70-71SS's with console or were the rules same for both?
I have a feeling that I've seen somewhere a GM ad's from 70Z that has a console and plain black knob? Does anyone else remember those one ??

COPO 07-19-2002, 10:54:00 AM Hate to tell you guys but the 71 Z shifter knob looked like this http://members.rogers.com/mlvd/help.htm when I owned my '71 in '75 and kept it.
1970 had the chrome when you had a console.
2 piece chrome bottom/black top with white numbers for a non console.

I don't think that knob in your picture for a 71 With a Console is correct. Did you buy the car new or in 1975? That knob is the early style 72 Knob for the ITM Shifter.

cudo's everyone. Learn something new everyday. cool.
COPO 07-20-2002, 11:47:00 AM Bought the '71 in '75. I guess the shift pattern explains it. What about a non console '71 Z28 Bob?
I do have a new ITM shifter I tried to sell years ago. I guess they are crap.
