I am seriously considering building a 70-73 Camaro street/strip car instead of trying to find an over-priced 67-69 Camaro to start with. I am curious what a 70-73 will weigh compared to a 1st Gen. Here's what I got in mind:

Mini-tubbed, 10-12" tire. Ladder bars or Cal-Tracs. 10 pt cage, no backseat. Factory glass. Fiberglass hood.

I have a 406 that I was going to put into my '55, but the car is more of a street rod than a strip car. It's a 509 block, Lunati crank and rods, Lunati/Taylor pistons (10.5-1), AFR 220s (Competition ported), Isky roller (640" in/ex, 258/262 @.050, 110 lobe center), Victor Jr. w/930 DaVinci. I may even run a Victor Tunnel Ram w/modified 660s later because I think it may work awesome. Not too many guys run Tunnel Rams, but in theory, it should work very well. I would like to get the car into the 9's with Nitrous.

I would like any opinion that anybody has on this subject. There are so many early Camaros out here in southern California that a nice 70-73 would be a nice change.

The cars weighed in the 3500-3800 range from the factory. It's just a matter of how much your willing to sacrafice (time and $'s) to get the weight down. There is a 70 running S/ST here that is ~2800 and looks perfectly complete. He goes 10.2's off the stop with a sweet 350/glide, backhalfed ladderbar car. I kinda wonder why you would need giggle gas to get something like that into the 9's with your motor package.

My '71 was listed as 3300 on the registration, with NO power options or AC. My '78 is listed at 3700, fully loaded with AC, PS, PB, power windows and locks etc.

Our '71 weighed 3154 lb with the all steel small block and 4-speed. No driver, but no fiberglass, full interior, and nothing gutted. Full exhaust, power steering, power brakes, but no air conditioning or roll cage.

A;ex,

If you think that your street/ strip amy turn into a serious strip car, pony up and do a first gen. The car will have a better f/r ratio, and the aftermarket front end componets are far superior than thoese offered for a secong gen. I have done both, and I will never build a second gen for a q mile car.

For a street strip car, you could look to be in the 3100 pound range. It would be ok for that. I personally like the second gen better.

Thats just the car. The only thing I have left to lighten up are the doors.
