With the old Saginaw 4-speed and street tires the best I could get was 14.7@96mph with 2.29 60ft time in 60 degree, dry air. In 70+ humid air I could only get a 14.9@95 even with a 2.24 60ft time. Put in the new Tremec TKO 5-speed, clutch and 275 Drag Radials at 20 psi and went to the track to get 4 runs in. Air temp was 85 and relative humidy at 79. The best of the 1st three runs was this:

60ft- 2.17
330-6.12
1/8th-9.40
MPH-75.46
1000-12.209
1/4th-14.58
MPH-95.41

On each of these three runs I dumped the clutch around 2,500rpms and got horrible, horrible wheel hop off the line and on the 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift. I'm suprised I didn't break anything. How much does this wheel hop cost me ET wise? The tires stuck it was just the car felt like it was gonna shake itself to death. I leave for college in a week and can only get one more track day in, will those cheap universal Lakewood traction bars that don't reach the perch eye work for one night at the track?

Let the car sit 2 hours, jetted up to 68s from 66s, air got cooler to 79 but humidity went up to 92. Heres the last and best run-
60ft-2.11
330-5.99
1/8th-9.22
mph-76.4
1000-12.00
1/4-14.35
mph-96.5

This was with the tires spinning hard out of the hole all the way through first(I didn't heat them up good), no wheel hop either. My shift points were all over the place too...5,300 once then 4,800 then 5,000. I can't believe this thing wants more fuel either...its only a 355 with world s/r heads and a 203/212@.050 (.425/.439)cam and its a Holley 650 Double Pumper that needs 31 squiters and an orange pump cam so theres no stumble.

I'm pretty impressed with the results from this tiny cam, basically stock small valved heads and a full street trim 3,800lb+ 81Z. Going back for the last time on Weds and hoping for cool air and no wheel hop..maybe 13s? It was soo humid out I saw 5 LS1s(all had exhausts, not sure of other mods) and fastest one was 13.9 but the others were 14.0-14.3 but they mph at 99-102. Any ideas of how much this wheel hop is killing me? I'm hoping to build the mildest 350 13 sec. ride in a full weight 2nd gen.

Just thought I would post this and get some critique from you old,,,ahh I mean experienced guys. Thanks!

Actually, I think those 60' times look good for the ET. I only get 1.92 60's and I'm a full 2 seconds quicker in the 1/4 than you. I got tons of respect for anyone who can run with a stick! Your gonna need to change something to get that 13 though, your still 3 tenths off. Looks like your on the right track by jetting it, your mph picked up. Try a little more of that & maybe try fiddling with the timing.

Your wheel-spin is KILLING your ETs... In '81, I put a small cam (.450"/218* @ .050") in my stock LM1 short-block '79 Z28, with 64cc 1.94"/1.50" heads, an 'old' 327/365 HP intake, 'on-sale' headers, 650 dbl-pump Holley, and a shift-kit in the THM350. On the OEM 225/70R15 Uniroyals, it ran 14.40s @ 97 MPH with a 'one-wheel-peel' 3.42 gear. With 4.11s & 'sticky-Mickeys', it ran 14-teens @ 97 MPH (my local 'Oh-Dark-Thirty-Drag-O-Way' didn't get 60' clocks until '92!!!). I didn't notice your rear-gear ratio; try stick-tires (or slicks!) & gears.....

Hey Nick, I'm going to the track tomorrow, hope to see you there. I'm going down to play with the firebird, so if I get a chance, I'll see if I can find you and give you a hand. I'll be in the hot car pits, my car is purplish gray, and of course, and the number is 1283.

Hey hope to see you there too. I'll be the black 81Z, horrible body shape, with different black steel wheels on the back and aluminums up front. Will be rolling with a mint teal 92 Bird and maybe even this guys second gen white Berlinetta with 16" GTA rims on it(engine is a dog tho). I can't get far in braket racing yet, haven't found any consistancy at the tree(.524 one light and .855 the next). I'm the tall, skinny, unshaven goofy looking 20 year old, probably walking around with my dad and bestfriend(if you see some tall blonde with short short shorts on it is prolly his gf).

Gonna get there at 5;30 if I can, they always let the street cars get a couple quick rounds in before they open it up to everyone. Now I need to find someone that sells those cheap Lakewood bars and put em on tommorrow.

PS- Which is the hot cars pits? Is that the one that is paved to the right when you enter? I'll be in the gravel part to the left(which sucks cause my Drag Radials pick up all the stones and spit em out on my burnout).

Yes, the paved area is the hot car pits. I have to pick up my firebird, so I'll have my truck and trailer. You'l probably see my Firebird on the way in.
