I want to put a manual tranny in my 600(Shoould be on the dyno next week sometime) hp bbc powered T/A. I was wondering who else is running these in a street/strip car turning some respectable numbers? And, what kind of tranny is it?

Thanks,
Cale

I for one am running a Doug Nash straight cut dogbox.
One of their so called "dragrace" boxes.
Run by a 4 disc sintered clutch.

Doesn't sound too good for a driver though? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Manny, Marv (and everyone else) is laughing at me but:
I intend on running my stock M21 behind my 468. For a couple passes I'd guess.

I have a hayes 2700# clutch. My theory is it worked for the boss, it should work for me.

I have a scatter shield. I expect to be dead meat on the track, especially if i'm put in the electronics class due to my 2 step ignition.

I haven't run my car yet. I intend on using it on the street occasionally, which is another reason why I opted for the 4 speed.

I'm paying attention to the responses here as well in case I need to upgrade in the future to something that'll live behind my engine and still require a human being (or something similar) to operate. i.e. don't tell me to upgrad to a Powerglide.

100% of every drag car I saw at Super Chevy was an automatic. I was always the odd-ball.

You go MadMike! If it works out for your car, I'd really like to hear about it, cause I want something like that!

Well, Marv and I have a good friend who has a lot of manual experience for drag racing.

Unfortunatley the news ain't good.

Unless you shell BIG coin, most out there won't hold over 500 horse.

Our friend Roger had a Doug Nash/Richmond 5 speed that was Pro Shifted by Liberty and had all the bells and whistles... and it wouldn't last more than a few passes at 600 horse.

He had the trans out more than it was in.

As for the M21 behind a BBC... well.... that's a short relationship too http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

My dad has a M22 behind a Crate LS6 and it's been a short ride also.

They just aren't meant for the abuse.

I have the trick to keeping theset things alive, its actually quite simple, keep some really crappy 185 - 50R15 radials on the back of the thing & the tranny will hold up for just about forever.

if all you do is smoke the tires for about 1300', tranny life will not be an issue.

Hey Bobalos, that sounds like a plan to me...think they'd throw me off the track for a full track burnout?

If it was the burn out yes, if if was on the green you ought to be good. makes for a heck of a video as well http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

The tremec tko is probably the only well-priced option for this kinda swap and that is only rated at 475-525 depending on who you talk to but a while ago i was searching the board and found one of the more veteran, respected members back these trannys up, saying he has never seen one break and even seen a couple in 10 second cars(i think the member was camjocb or something like that). Is it the best option?Probably not but if you want manual to work with that kinda power you will have to make some sacrifices, whether it be in the wallet or peice of mind.

I honestly have not heard anything good about Tremec. I've heard good things from Tremec, but not from folks who have used their stuff.

I have however heard good things from Jerico.

What are those 5.0 guys running? they seem to be getting some pretty good mileage out of the sticks in those cars & they are pretty darn fast.

I have heard good things about Jericos also, except the price tag of coarse.

I run an M21 behind my 350 in my nova and its holding up pretty well under daily driving and the occasionaly idiotic moment. I have a friend who is running an M22 behind a 396 (dyno'd at 655 hp w/out N2O, 825 w) and his will last for 6 months of hard driving then he typically loses one gear. The M22 he is currently running has lasted him over a year. With lots of hp/tq your going to be good at doing transmissions unless you spend the $$$$ to get a good one built.

There's a lot of the late model Mustang guys running nines with the TKO's. I'm not sure what if any mods are done to them. I personally as noted above have never seen one break; I'm sure there have been failures, just never heard of them. I had one in a 10 second car with 7500 rpm shifts with no issues. I also have one currently behind my ProCharged 540, but to be fair, it hasn't seen the track....yet. It will when I get the cage done and I'll re-post if I break it.

I have run a Doug Nash street tranny for 22 years in my 80. I have broken it a couple of times but not too bad. If I had to replace it I would go with a G-Force [http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/tran_gf5r.asp] it has a torsion bar which is ideal for our heavy cars.

Lemme tell ya,
I can break a transmission...
Manual, auto, you name it,
Maybe that's why I learned how to rebuild 'em...
M22 is overrated, not really that much tougher than M20 or M21, just puts less stress on the trans because of high rpm and the gears pushing away from each other like a M20 or M21, really made to road race. Not drag race.
Gears are all heat treated the same.
Th350's I can blow 'em up so good, you can't even disassemble them http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
Th400's I can weld the clutch plates together...
Any manual transmission I drive for extended periods of time seem to:
1. Blow out the input cluster http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
2. Shift forks get BENT.
3. Synchros look like they need dentures.
4. They get broken so bad you can't disassemble them...
You put the skinney a$$ tires on there I'll break it when I slam the next gear.
Jerico is probably the toughe$t, Richmond is OK.
Stock factory offerings ain't gonna cut it.
Manual trans are cool, fun to drive, and get broke, that's why they are hard to find.
You wanna near bulletproff trans get a built 400,
you wanna have fun shifting, you open the pocket book.
Clutches, forks, synchros, oops need a couple of cluster gears, damn I blew out the ring and pinion, U joints, axles, leaf springs, shifter linkages (need Hursts number?), input bearings, might even need a steering column if this puppy is a 3 on the tree.
Been there done that.
