View Full Version : Went a few rounds, had some fun!
Marv D 08-11-2002, 02:45:00 PM No 11.4's yet but were getting close. In fact too damn close. With only 8 passes on the little "son of frankenstine" 355 it's throwing me some curves trying to find consistancy. It went a best of 11.548 @ 115.8 last night. Shame I was dialed at 11.58 (DOH!!!). Consistantly this chassis gives up 0.035 to the right lane at Firebird. Previous pass was 11.548 @ 115.7 in the left lane, I'm laddered with a 8.90 SuperComp dragster and he has lane choice. He stuffs me in the right lane so I dial 11.58 expecting to loose 0.035 to the lane. I DRILLED this guy on the tree. My .506 to his .558, (Teehehehe he wasn't expecting that). On the top end I look in the rear view and see a 150MPH long car bearing down on me hard. Man I HATE being the slower car! I just didn't lift soon enough!!! The stupid thing runs ANOTHER 11.548 in the slow lane. WTF is this?? If I'd stayed with it, it had to have been a 11.51 pass. He takes the win on a double breakout but his breakout is not nearly as ugly as mine. (8.86 on a 8.87 dial to my 11.54 on a 11.58, OUCH!!)
Oh Well! 7100rpm like a song, finding a tune and launch this poor little thing likes,, the consistancy will come round. (Probably just as I get the 383 back together http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/frown.gif ) Still no progress on finding out what the hell is up with that. Havent found a thing that would keep it from reving. Spent some time on the phone with Lunati talking about the cam timing with the asymeterical roller lobe, but they were of very little help. Going to try to get the heads apart today,,, maybe something will show up there.
USA Z28 08-11-2002, 04:04:00 PM Marv,
The important thing is you were back at the track and having some fun.The consistency will come in time,it sounds like you are close. Not to shabby strappin an .506 on that delay box using pile of pipe.To bad you couldn't have left that 11.54 on the window.Nothing puts a smile on my face faster than watching a footbrake car strap .50 bulb and running dead on to put some dragester on the trailer. When Lunati was small racer oriented company, they had one of the best tech lines in the industry. Now that Holley has taken over, they got some guy setting in front of a computer trying to trouble shoot.Good luck on finding a problem with the 383.

Could you brag about that motor a bit here and tell us what its made of?

Marv D 08-11-2002, 08:17:00 PM Wade are you sure you want to know,,, you'll probably die laughing
Mousehouse 08-11-2002, 09:26:00 PM I don't know if they would be laughing or upset because of the performance that you have been able to get out of it.
I am glad you were able to go a few rounds and have some fun for a change.
wwest 08-11-2002, 09:40:00 PM I guess I want to know.
I realize that the rest of the drivetrain is fine tuned and that has a lot to do with it.
Ill bet you could run a 12 with a $1200 target master crate motor.

Marv D 08-12-2002, 01:26:00 AM Remember,, you asked Wayne http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
Just proof that you can NEVER have too many spare SBC parts laying around. You have to remember I threw this motor together with no expectations of it doing anything but turning 7400rpm to prove the damn Nova isn't posessed and get me through a few team races while I go through the 383.
Started with a loose 3970010 block that was +.030 but never decked, knocked the ridge off and gave it a hone with a 3stone hone that was missing one stone (used a rag in place of the missing stone to keep from scratching the bore). I bought 3 sets of used TRW L2304F (the old LT1 clones) pistons some years ago at an auction. They were used in propane motors so they havent been beat too hard.
Crank is just a clean cast 10/10 350 crank that I kept from an old Blazer motor. Rods,, well other than having the cheaper ARP bolts, nothing but resized stockers that have been laying around here for years. Put it together with Clevite bearings and Hastings cast rings from NAPA. Comp 305H hydraulic cam that was in the truck a few years ago, same box stock Edelbrock #6071 RPM heads that were on the truck in the nitrous days (I've sold these things twice, but they keep coming back) Still had the 3/8" stud, $200 Summit roller rockers and pushrods that were on the nitrous motor. Intake is a VERY used Vic Jr with stock ports that was on the blown up 327 that was sitting in the Nova when I bought it. Only trick part on the motor is a Prosystems tweeked 4224 I borrowed from a good friend. Patrick got it flowing 976cfm.
The motor is VERY lazy coming up against the 5000 stall convertor but once she's making some steam she goes OK I guess.
Rings, bearings, timing set and FelPro gaskets I think I have about $265 in the motor. Rest of it was just stuff laying around for years. Obviously the heads are worth more than the rest of the motor, and the borrowed carb is worth more than the 5year old used heads.
Oh, guess I should mention,,, with the 70cc heads and stock deck this thing is only making 9.75:1 compression, so this is something new,, stop at the local self serv and dump 5 gallons of pump fuel in the cell (LMAO). Was shifting at 7400 last weekend and 7100 last night,,, it is still nosing over pretty good. As it comes up to shift rpm I was reminded of the infamous words of Mr Scott

"But Captin I giving her all she's got, If we keep this up she's gonna blow"
wwest 08-12-2002, 03:34:00 AM killin' me.......
cycowrencher 08-12-2002, 09:56:00 AM marv, that sounds like the motors we used to run at potomac in out circle track car... those were the days
craggar 08-12-2002, 10:20:00 AM Marv I did the same thing yesturday in the 1st round .518 to a .6? and slowed down but was afraid of him screaming by so I broke out by .002 and still had a car length on him.I didn't think the car would pick up like it did.I did have a better day on Sat. though, went to the semi's again with nothing worse than a .540 all day which was the last one where the other guy got a .525 and we both ran our #'s.I'm still fighting the frigging 1st gear miss that I thought I had fixed not to mention a converter that is suppose to stall at 3700-4000rpm but when I load it up to 2000rpm it starts to push me through the lights and my best 60' was launching at 1500rpm.

patgizz 08-12-2002, 10:20:00 AM marv those are the heads i kept pestering you to sell me http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif maybe when you get the 383 workin again you could sell them for a third time.
Quick69 08-12-2002, 10:45:00 AM Marv,
I need you to build me a motor!
Just use your rpm heads, and some other junk laying around and maybe you can get my pig into the .20's! LOL
Marv D 08-12-2002, 03:08:00 PM Chris, you know what happens when I try,, I end up with a POS that won't rev at all. But just send me that old hunk of pig iron sitting between the fenders of the Camaro and I'll do some 'testing' for ya (LMFAO) (BTW, my e-mail is all screwed up, did you or the other guys receive the time slips I sent yesterday?)
Pat, yes these are the same 6071's, I sold them to a kid here who got layed off before he ever got them totally paid for, we canceled that deal (he needed groceries worse than the heads) and I had them sold to a guy in the team, but he has disappeared and not shown up for a race in the last 4 months.
Cragger.. man it sounds like it's time for a transbrake. A lot of classes will allow a transbrake with a single wire between the button and solenoid. R/T and E/T improves greatly. Just a matter of the class and sanctioning body. Here a transbrake is allowed in the no E class as long as it's one single wire with no splices, straight to the transbrake. You would really LOVE it!
craggar 08-12-2002, 04:40:00 PM I actually had a 400 with a brake but ended up trading it for part of the paint job after getting screwed out of my money by the first guy.We are allowed to have them here as well in N/E like you said though one wire no splices.I will be putting one in this winter evryone tells me they're a blast.
dcozzi 08-12-2002, 09:23:00 PM Firebird? I've got to come out and see it run sometime. Do you go out on Friday?
wwest 08-12-2002, 11:25:00 PM Hey Marv - Ill get in line behind Pat when the time comes to get rid of those heads. Are these the same heads we spoke of last fall?
Eventually they could end up on my Vette motor and I could step up to AFR's. With the money saved now I could get the rest of the car right. Cage - rear - etc.

patgizz 08-12-2002, 11:46:00 PM ya i was 2nd in line before - wish i knew that kid didnt come thru http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif id have had new heads instead of buying that nitrous crap from manny that i dont have anymore lol
patgizz 08-13-2002, 11:09:00 AM manny, take it easy bud. everything was said in jest.
Marv D 08-13-2002, 12:36:00 PM Pat you have to remember,, those Portugese are quick tempered and HOT BLOODED, man he will slit your throat, **** down the hole and go cook your girlfriend for dinner. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif And if you think that's bad you ought to see what happens if you really piss him off! (ROTFLMAO)
Manny buddy, just funin' with ya, you know that. Man do you need some more track time,,, your sooo tense! withdrawals??? or still pumped from that 10.80 you ran last weekend. Yes,, I'm letting the cat out of the bag. Manny went another 10.8 naturally aspirated last weekend with a small block (your reading this Wayne!!!). Congrats pal.
I don't think anybody took that wrong. I think Pat just realized N2o with a set of crap heads vs a better head in the first place was a choice that fell under the "Roger Rule"

Make your choices, pay your money, live with the results
not that there was anything wrong with the purchase, other than the decision.
Marv D 08-13-2002, 12:44:00 PM Sheeze,, I couldn't hardly give these heads away last year, now two of you are wanting them. I tried to almost give them to Brett but he didn't want to mess with the angle plug deal. Do I see a bidding war in the future here (grin, you guys know I don't work that way). Let's see how they survive the 'son of frankenstine' and however many races it takes to get the 383 back together and we'll talk.

COACH PURSES (http://icoachhandbags.com/)
Marv D 08-13-2002, 10:47:00 PM dcozzi, sorry I somehow missed your post until just now. Yes I'm what you call a regular ET-a-holic at Firebird. I'm there at least every other friday night, EVERY saturday test and tune (only happens once a month) and have only missed one Team Firebird race this year. Look for a little RED ) shoebox 64 Chevy II called Casa^Nova. Be glad to meet another member of the board here.
(sidenote: Jake dammit, don't even think about it!, you know what I'm talking about)
Now for the good news. Got a letter from Firebird today. Not only did this 'son of frankenstine' go a few rounds,, it seems I didn't pay attention to how many rounds. Moved up from 14th to 9th in the points and they enclosed a nice little check for my troubles. LMAO, I was just out there making laps,, didn't realize I had made it to the 1/4 finals,. What a hoot!
jakeshoe 08-14-2002, 12:13:00 AM What ARE you talkin' about Marv?
LMAO
I don't have a really good photo host and spending too much money on the 'Velle to get one otherwise I would post a good pic of your car Marv. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
Speakin' of Novas, I plan to go pick mine up in Sept if things continue to go smooth.
I still need to buy rods, balancer, heads, intake, headers, etc...
It won't be DONE till next year but the block is already bored, will finish hone when I go to WA.
Bring it all back and get to work on it.
Probably get it running, take it to the track and see if I can get kicked out for not having a cage, then bring it home and put a cage in it.
But I may go overboard once it needs that.
Since I have the Chevelle as a driver I'm gonna make the Deuce my strip car.
Shoudl be fun,
but I tell ya once I get it here I'm gonna take a break. I'm smoked from all the work to fund then complete the Chevelle.
wwest 08-14-2002, 12:33:00 AM Ill handle the pic of Marvs car.
Hes on my website.

It would be a GOOD pic of if the colors were right but unfortunately someone didn't like the true color and altered the pic obviously.
Here's the original pic of the correct color of Marvs car:

Marv D 08-14-2002, 09:33:00 AM Jake has a 'thing' for pink cars.
wwest 08-14-2002, 09:38:00 AM I figured it was something like that.
A picture of a jack under the fron end would be funnier though.
patgizz 08-14-2002, 09:55:00 AM car craft went that far a few yrs ago - they put the car on the line and put stands under it, then photoshopped the stands out. kinda pissed me off and then i quit reading the mag.
my headers work with angle plugs marv http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif(they actually were made for angle plugs so i got 2 plugs in my stupid straight plug heads i cant get to with anything but an open wrench) :P
manny - marv hit it on the head. why bother with nitrous when i got crap for heads. all that stuff i got from you was the money i had saved up for those heads.
