View Full Version : Plumbing fuel cell
MadMike 05-04-2002, 04:50:00 PM I have a Jaz, 12 gallon fuel cell.
There's 2 -8 AN outlets on the bottom.
and 1 -6AN "vent".
I need to run a return line back from my regulator, and I was going to plumb it into what I just found out is the vent.
But then I realized - the cell does need to be vented right? If I run the return into the vent, then will I run into a vaccum situation?
What should I do?
MadMike 05-04-2002, 05:00:00 PM Ah, searching for "fuel cell vent" I found patgizz & Marv's exchange.
Can one of those -8An OUTLETS be used as an INLET? Wouldn't that bubble up the fuel or cause turbulence in the fuel if I'm blowing fuel back in right next to where I'm also pulling it out?
rscamaro73 05-04-2002, 09:09:00 PM Couldn't you just add your OWN port on it ?
I dunno if Russel makes a fitting to do this. Maybe you can scrap a fitting from another cell & use that ?
Nothing would work thru the cap either with maybe a downtube pointed away from the 2 outlets at the bottom ? Would depend if the cap is a quick release (like 1/3 turn) or the threaded one (old ones I've seen).
Morkai 05-04-2002, 11:36:00 PM could you add a one-way valve to the vent and use that as the return and the vent?

Marv D 05-05-2002, 11:23:00 AM Mike your right, you NEED the vent. Make sure it has a roll-over check valve in it and even then it's a good idea to put a loop in the vent line and I like to put a small fuel filter in the end of the vent line (keeps all the little critters out of the line and cell)
As far as plumbing the return into one of the an-8 fittings at the sump, thousands of guys do it and have no problems. If your pump/regulator and return is creating so much airiation that it causes a problem,,, something else is wrong IMO. If you drop your return line in a 5gal. bucket,, drop both float bowls in a bucket up front and pump 2 or 3 gal. through the system,, you'll see what I mean. This is a good real world test that the system is capable of supplying all the fuel the needle and seat can possibly flow and still have enough volume to return something to the cell. Even at max fuel use like in this test, all it's going to do is reduce the flow out the return, not add air to the return line. At least it shouldn't.
If you really want to get anal about it fine,, add another fitting up towards the front/side of the cell (Jeggy's part # 547-832-108-11 & 547-850-508-04 poly washer, for an-8.. $13)
MadMike 05-05-2002, 04:41:00 PM So I can drill a hole into this "plastic" thing and add a return line?
Or I can use the other output plug.
I doubt the -6 vent has a check ball in it, it's probably the cheapo -6 bulkhead fitting.
Marv: I'm running -8 all the way to the carb. For a pump I have a mallory 250 and the regulator is the mallory 5 port job. The fuel pump has 1/2" or -8 AN fittings so there's the restriction to -8. I was leaning toward running -10 but due to the size of the fuel pump fittings, I guess -8 will do it. So I should run a -8 back to the tank, right?
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
PaulyZ 05-05-2002, 08:52:00 PM Mike,
I am faced with the same problem. Everyone I have talked with have come up with the same thing.
Don't use the outlet or the vent. Drill another hole (top and forward), use the proper fitting (with the poly washer), and use some fuel line to make downtube pointed away from the sump area.
I have not got my car out yet so I can't tell you how it works, but the ones I saw (at the track) looked good.
wwest 05-06-2002, 06:18:00 PM Id use the other -8 port.
When I grow up and get rid of my crappy regulator and run a real one with a return line. Im going to run it to the -8 fitting.

Pc3 05-06-2002, 08:25:00 PM Mike use the 2nd 8an port for the return line and dont forget to plum it with eithier the same size feed line or bigger example 1/2 feed to regulator then use 1/2 or 5/8 return line back 2 fuel cell
Mike they make reducers 8an-10an and reverse I KNOW I KNOW they not cheap!!!!

PaulyZ 05-06-2002, 08:32:00 PM Just curious, if you used the other port wouldn't the returning fuel interfere with exiting fuel? (the ports are side by side, right?)
MadMike 05-06-2002, 10:12:00 PM That's what I had asked, but apparently the incoming fuel isn't forceful enough to interfere with the outgoing fuel.
I'm in a quandry. I'm preparing to do this both ways. Manny, I got a total $ of what I need to complete my fuel system. I need 2 -10 to -8 reducers, 3 plugs & 2 -8 fittings just to plumb my regulator. That's about what - $70 without the lines. Oww Oww (picture me holding ass with both hands)
I might be cutting peter browns grass for a few months as he's got an inside deal and can help me out with some of this stuff. otherwise I wouldn't be able to continue with this particular pile at this time.

3 Star Z27 05-10-2002, 04:31:00 PM Mike,
Sounds exactly like my setup right down to the JAZ cell. Any pictures of how you mounted your cell? I plan on keeping mine above the trunk pan so that I don't need to add a protection cover on the exterior lower pan to cover what would be the exposed sump.
I did form a tunnel to pass the hoses from the 8-AN fittings out but would like to see just how you mounted the actual cell.
Pc3 05-10-2002, 07:07:00 PM http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif mike It only looks like your holding your ass wut in fact is your reaching in back pockets looking for more dough! dont forget the plug for the mallory pump too
I have basically the same setup you have Mallory 250 ,mallory 3 port instead of 5 wait till you start saying sheesh it sure would look good to have a russel dual carb feed ,then then comes the braided hose and so on and so on

patgizz 05-13-2002, 04:03:00 PM mike,
i just plumbed my return line for the EFI. i drilled a new hole on top and off to the side(the corner opposite the outlet so as not to send bubbles to my pump)
i drilled a hole, got a hardware store fitting with a -6 top and a normal threaded bottom, made a nut out of a pipe nipple, put some black RTV on it and put it in. works like a charm.
that way nothing is interfering with my vent and my rollover valve is legal.
Rat 427 05-14-2002, 02:56:00 PM I cheated and bought summits aluminum cell. Came with 2 -10 outlets, and 2 -8 fittings on top (one with a rollover check ball).
But like Pat said, they (Aeroquip or Russel) make a fitting to put in the top off the cell. Just drill the hole and install the new fitting with supplied plastic washers. Biggest pain is reaching inside the tank to put the other side of the fitting in. If you know someone with a small enough hand to reach all the way in the tank thru the filler, have them reach in. Otherwise you have to remove all the screws holding your filler assembly in to get the extra room to get your big hands in.
