View Full Version : 4" and larger cowl hoods on the street???
PONYEATER 01-08-2002, 01:11:00 PM I got rid of my 3" cowl and I'm pretty much set on a 4" cowl now but I'm a little weary since the local police are cracking down on anything that looks or sounds remotely fast.(foriegn or domestic) Anyone every got in trouble for there hood? I'm looking up the washington state laws but I'm curious about other peoples experience becuase if it can happen to someone else it can happen to me.

craggar 01-08-2002, 01:29:00 PM Around here they don't even bother guys with blowers until they get caught doing something stupid then they're all over them.
2x4 01-08-2002, 06:14:00 PM in mich, if you car looks good enough (nice paint & your driving it carefully) they dont really mess with you. check out my car-it should be "instant cop attractant" but i havent even been followed yet.
my 91 z28 was all stock (white with the huge rear spoiler) and the bugged me to the point of harassment. thats 100% of the reason i sold it.
the biggest no-no i found is window tint!
Morkai 01-08-2002, 08:03:00 PM What is the largest cowl type scoop? I know there's 4" and I guess 5", but I'm looking for something that'll cover up my 6-71. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
The plan is to take another hood an cut it for the blower, and if I can find a scoop big enough that'll cover it, I'll fix it to where I can pin it and remove it for good weather etc.

bys71 01-08-2002, 09:45:00 PM ponyeater,
here in jersey, i drove my 82 cutlass with a 4" cowl hood. was stopped for speeding, but nothing was said about hood. i put a 4" on my 80 camaro before inspection(private), and the guy would not inspect it. i guess it just depends on the area.
n2omichael 01-08-2002, 10:10:00 PM Its been my experience that you will get alot less hassle with a cowl hood as opposed to a giant "Pro Stock" style, like someone said nice paint and a clean car help. Morkai, you can get a cowl hood in just about any height you want, alot of fiberglass/carbon fiber guys will make either the scoop or complete hood, just my opinion, but, I think anything over about 6" cowl just doesn't look right, again, just a personal preference

Morkai 01-08-2002, 10:30:00 PM Yeah, I would probably agree, I'm not a big cowl fan period. (it reminds me of rustangs)
I guess I'll just have to wait and see how much I need, but I have to do 'something' to be able to drive in unpredictable weather. I might have to get a prostock style that's bigger in the front.
I have some of the same worries about the cops bothering me with a big 6-71 poking out of the hood, but I don't think they'll bother me bad around here as long as I'm not getting wild. I've seen mustangs around here running around with the prostock style scoops on their hoods as well.

Cam73 01-09-2002, 02:06:00 AM You could try asking you're buddie with the Orange Z. That hood is huge, not to mention the tires, wheelie bars and exhaust. Is that a WA car?
n2omichael 01-09-2002, 03:23:00 AM I have found that cruising around with a baby seat in the passenger seat works well too!!!
"I am just going to pick up my daughter officer", the cop HAS to know you aren't about to drive stupid, or do any racing with a baby in the car [well, I sure as heck wouldn't anyway]

IPTU 01-09-2002, 09:36:00 AM just like 2X4 said,if the car looks good & you don't punch it at every stop sign or traffic light they should'nt hassle you.here in montreal we have many very high horse-powered cars being clearly not road legal, with nitrous & big blowers.but they are playing the game,as i said above.my 69 car has a 5 inch cowl,12 point cage and i have not been hassled yet, hehe
Speedy 73 01-09-2002, 09:30:00 PM Morkai, In response to your question of how big of a cowl hood can you get, I almost fell over a few weeks ago when I was reading an Unlimited Products ad in a Super Chevy magazine and saw that they make a 9 INCH COWL HOOD!!!! Whoa!
CoryM 01-09-2002, 11:33:00 PM Here in vancouver BC you won't be bothered by cops for a cowl hood. But then again Ive seen alchol powered cars drive past cops and not get pulled over.
2x4 is dead right about no window tint though.
Just make sure you can see over your cowl hood. I drove a 70 vette with 4" hood and at 6ft tall I had to stick my face up to the windshield to see over it.
have fun.
