I bought my 79 camaro a few years ago and the stereo in it had been taken out. The only speaker in it is the one under the dash. Anyway, Im have 2 6.5s that I will be putting in the front doors, and I have 2 6x9s that I was going to put in the rear package tray.

Please keep in mind that this is my first stereo /speaker install, but I thought the 6x9s were supposed to literally drop in the package tray holes...but the speakers are to big to do that.

So what I did was mount the speaker grill on the top of the package tray and put the speaker in from the bottom (from the trunk)...besides being a pain in the ass, it looks stupid from the top because i can see the metal of the package tray between the speaker and the grill.

What am i missing here?

That's the way Chevy did it. The grille went on top of the package tray, and the speaker went under it. If you are seeing the edge of the package tray, either your speakers aren't the correct size, or the holes in your tray aren't right.

I will re check the holes...but the speakers are just off the shelf Pioneer 6x9s.

The cage which surrounds the speaker I bet isnt the same size as an original shaped speaker. Youll either have to reshape the hole or go from the bottom.

The issue is the grilles. Factory grilles were were perforated flat metal stampings. Pioneer and other aftermarket grilles are much taller and much more open, usually using a wire screen. Unfortunately, it also allows more visibility into the speaker hole and the edges show. Hit them with some flat black paint, or use a different grille. The other thing I've done is stretch some black speaker grille cloth over the hole and then install the grille. The cloth covers is all up.

i bought a new back dash with speaker holes in it, only like $35, and i mounted my sony 6x9s from underneath( by way of trunk) and forgot about the grills. still get all the same sound and it looks clean and original!

5 x 7 speakers work better in that application. 6 x 9 are too big unfortunately. Can you make them fit? Yes,is a PITA... 5 x 7 bolt right in and fit the factory cut outs.

I took a Dremel with a diamond wheel . Marked the hole then trimmed it. Smoothed it with a wire wheel then put aluminum seal tape around the hole. Then the speakers dropped right in. I used the Infinety Kappas 6x9 . Hope this helps. Tommy
