I am looking at a 1978 camaro Z28, does anybody know how to identify the motor and tran as a numbers matching to the car?
Do you have to pull a head off to get the serial #'s ?
And where on the transmission?
Thanks

I might be corrected later but a partial VIN will be stamped on the engine pad in frt of your passenger side head behind your alternator and I think also your partial VIN will be stamped on the tranny case on the left side near the gear selector level. I think is correct but somene may have a more clearer description of where they are for your 78.

Welcome SBC! Been doing a lot of research on the engine codes for '78 Z/28's. Posted most of my findings in the thread (linked below). A partial VIN should be stamped on the engine block as per post above, and also on the passenger side of the Borg Warner tranny. Have to get way under there so you can see the upper part of the case though. These should match the last part of your dash VIN.
