I JUST BOUGHT ANOTHER 74 z28 AND WAS A LITTLE PUZZLED WITH THE FACT IT IS A COLUMN SHIFTER CAR. IT IS A T engine code and norwwod made car so the cowl tag is stamped with the Z28 rpo this is also a LT.the rest of the car is correct L82 ,400trans ,3.42 posi rear HD springs/shocks dual exhaust ect.. i just assumed that a type LT would come with a center consul and thus a floor shifted auto.my question is this could a type LT Z28 come with no center consul and thus be (i just answered my own question)LOL shifted on the steering column. i have had 2 4spd Zs and 2 with automatics all had center consuls so all 4 were floor shifted ,it just seemed a little strange having to shift on the column, was this combo original? Thanks

From time to time I have heard other members here mention having a Z with a column shifter, I have never seen one, but I guess they do exist.

Bucket seat cars with no console are a bit out of the ordinary but auto shifters on the column did exist in these cars.

I'm surprised the LT didn't come with a console but I don't believe the console was standarad with any model in 74.

I can't imagine anyone ditched the console and installed a column shift so it is probably factory.

Finding a copy of the build sheet might clear up the mystery. Its possible the car was ordered that way.

My first 70 Z-28, which I ordered new, had the Turbo 400 shift "on the tree".

With the special convertor and higher rpm shifting valve body these were very quick Camaros (in their day).

Very interesting..that is the first 74Z28 I 've heard of like that . I 've seen a couple of 70-72 on ebay equipped that way. Certainly possible I would think a 74Z28 could have been ordered too. ;)

Maybe , the center console was automatically deleted from the Type LT package , if the trannie shift was ordered on the collumn.

A build sheet would be useful .

Pics would be nice.:D

The '74 Type LT never had console as standard equipment. I paid to have that option on my car.

Not Z28's but my room mate in the Army (1976) had a 75 Camaro with a 350 and a column mounted shifter. It really was odd looking.

While not a Camaro, approx 30 years ago, I looked at a '64 impala SS with a factory 3 on the tree AND the console. It had a engine-turned plate covering the normal shifter opening. Never saw or heard of another like this.

If you ordered an automatic and did not order a console. You got a column shifter

My 74 came with a column shift and as far as when they were ordered as mentioned above if not ordered with the console they got the column. I just finished converting mine to floor shifter.

I saw a few of them growing up,It is what it is because very few did come that way I know.1970-74 Z28 cars very rare.I never saw any 1977-81 Z28's come that way.
