Has this every happened to you? Sure it has. You're working on your car late at night, just about done for the night, and you drop the last valve cover bolt into the engine compartment.

What's the first thing you do? You kneel down, hoping and praying it actually fell through the engine compartment onto the ground, underneath. After you've searched behind every cigarette butt, piece of gravel and behind both front tires, you realize it isn't on the ground. It's in the smallest, deepest, darkest crevice in the engine compartment, hiding from you, holding its hands over its eyes, giggling the whole time, knowing you're never going to find it, just waiting for its chance to fall out about 2 miles from your house where it will be picked up by some kid who will use it to break out his neighbor's window with this sling-shot.

So, what's next? You grab the telescopic magnet and fish around for the bolt with one hand, at the same time you try and aim the flashlight with the other hand. Right when you think you see it, you feed the magnet down past every other piece of metal, fighting it the entire way as it continues to stick to every thing except the bolt.

After about 1/2 hour of fighting the magnet, trying to bend the light around corners so you can see, and hitting your head on the hood a couple of times, you finally give up and decide you'll just have to run to the parts store in the morning and grab another one.

Well, your prayers have been answered!!!

But... The nut I lost was stainless steel.
(A magnet won't pick it up and I still don't know where it went.)

Seriously.... I used a bunch of stainless hardware when I redid the engine.
My brake booster started leaking vacuum.
While replacing it.... I dropped one of those stainless nuts into the "Depths of Irretrievability".

I replaced that one with a steel nut.

The light on the end might have helped me find it before it ended up through a neighbors window. ;)

Good write-up!!! :D
