I recently purchased a 1970 Z28/RS and it has a metal insignia on the rear facia that reads "by Berger".I"ve traced it back to a dealership in Grand Rapids,Michigan.I called them and spoke with a gentleman who has worked there since the early 70's and he tells me that they had a racing dept. back then which was closed shortly after he started.Has anyone ever heard of a Berger Camaro and where could I find any info about them. Thanks!

As you've already found out, Berger is still in existence today. They just celebrated their 75th year by creating the Berger 75th Anniversay Camaro SS (with about 375 hp). Back in "the day" they were among the Chevy dealers like Yenko, Dana, etc. that modified cars for the buying public. I don't know how extensive their mods were; don't know if they ever got into 427 COPOs, for instance.
I have seen Berger Camaros with the "by Berger" insignia on the back panel, but I can't tell you if that signifies anything by itself. If it's original to the car, it may only tell you that it was originally sold at Berger. Or it may tell you that it was modified at Berger. Do you have any paperwork?

Looks like you got a car with history. I can't remember all the details, but that car was a few steps down from the Motion Cars, and well above the regular Camaros - Z's included.

My 70 z is also a Berger car.All it is a dealer tag every new car on the lot got one even 4 cyl novas. It is however a status symbol of sorts. They did sell copo cars back in 69,just didn't put stripes or special paint on them like yenko ect. They did and as far as I know still do have a hot rod parts dept.A very performance minded dealership.I have seen the new Berger Camaro, very nice for a 4th gen,car

Berger was playing with the performance big boys back in 69' they sold COPOs and even ZL-1s. But I think the "By Berger" was on every car they sold.

Berger is only about 20 minutes from me. I cann't add a whole lot to the disscusion other than in "the Day" Berger was similiar, I think, to Nickey. You could buy your new Chevy through them and have their Performance Dept. dealer install about anything available at the time. Do you have a #'s car? Is there anything Hi-Po on that you can date to that era? Is it a big block car that perhaps they installed? It's worth looking into, if you can document that it has Berger installed performance mods on it I would think it would increase your value.
As far as I know Berger is the only one of the performance dealerships that's still around today. They just celabrated their 75th anniversary with a big car show (sucs I worked that weekend). At least they are still around for you to talk to although I don't know what kind of records they kept back then.
