Don't know if anyone has read the book, 52 Loaves of Bread, (basically one mans quest for the perfect loaf of bread). While perfecting his baking skills He ends up baking bread in a monastery in France to bring the art of bread making back to them. He had a lot of fun trying to get on the plane with starter dough (looks like plastic explosive), while questioning him they continue to go through his luggage and just when things don't look like they can get worse pull out the electonic scale, .... They do let him on the plane finally. The guy is a nut, growing his own wheat, soaking apples in water (non chlorinated) to start leaven process, we are not growing our own wheat! Also wrote the $64 Tomato (figured out how much one tomato costs after all the work of building a garden, tools, fert, seed etc).

Using the recipe in the book, Cheryl has been working on the starter dough (leaven) for weeks (yes she did the thing with the apple) and today she gave the actual baking of the bread a shot, here is her first loaf. Not sure how it tastes, she's throwing some steaks on the grill right now so we will find out in a little while.

Oh it is good, I have never had bread that tastes like this. Crust was maybe a little harder than it could have been but very tasty. She put a lot of work inot this single loaf. The guy who wrote the book baked a loaf every week for 52 weeks, hence the name of the book. I love bread, use to go to the grocery store in San Diego...six pack of a good dark beer and 6 fresh baked rolls to go with it, my friend would laugh, then sit down have a beer and a roll with me.

Now I'm gonna have to buy both books. My mom recently got into a little container gardening this past year and loves her some home grown Maters.

I'm gonna combine this thread, the home made butter and some aged steak here soon to say goodbye to summer. Oh and not to forget our own home grown maters as well.
