View Full Version : inexpensive header coating
muscl car 12-13-2002, 11:51:00 PM make sure tubes, flange and collector areas are clean of all paint and grease.now purchase a large bottle of anti-seize yes that's right anti-seize.with a cotton rag wipe the header completely with the coating probably 2 coats waiting 30 minutes between applications.next either using a blow torch or using your engines exh. heat after mounting on the heads .heat cycle them for 2 minutes or until they start to smoke.do this 3 times waiting 1/2 hour between heat cycles.once this has been done they will have the look of alumna-coated headers but for a cheaper price. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

FSEVENTY 12-14-2002, 02:04:00 PM They might have the look, but what about protection? If the coating won't take a small hit or scrape without the coating comming off, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. Do you know how much abuse the coating will take?

muscl car 12-14-2002, 06:53:00 PM the anti-seize has metal particles in the compound and when heated it melts/bonds to the metal.my headers have been coated this way now for 8 months and they still look great

muscl car 12-15-2002, 06:48:00 PM 72prostreet once the headers have been heat cycled a few times the coating will not come off.when handling the headers before heating them, yes you will get excess anti-seize on your hands.i would suggest using a garbage bag around the headers when installing them on the motor to keep everything neat until heat is applied.

1978LT 12-19-2002, 05:17:00 AM The good anti seize is good to 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Believe me, once it gets cooked, its on there to stay. We use it on plastic injection molds at work. They only reach 300-400 degrees and its enough to make that stuff hard.
marks LT 12-19-2002, 03:57:00 PM where can you get this?we dont have that store here in Texas.what kind of store is it?
muscl car 12-19-2002, 10:27:00 PM the anti-seize that i have is from permatex,it's the pint size container.just ask any auto parts store in your state if they carry it

KWIK 73 12-20-2002, 10:24:00 AM Sounds like not a bad idea, but how is it different from POR-20?
(POR-20 is the stuff similar to POR-15, but is silver, heat resistant up to 1400 degrees and has metal particles in it.)
$16.00 a half-pint.

Maliboost 04-23-2003, 05:48:00 PM My guess is that its the Moly in the Anti sieze that is what does the magic trick. I bet that just about anything with Moly in it will give you the same result.

marks LT 04-24-2003, 05:17:00 PM I tried this and did everything that you said to do and they looked good,I drove the car two times before I lifted the hood again and all the coating was bubbled and flaking off.The anti-seize I used was perma-tex any tip on how I can save or clean this up?
Mark
muscl car 04-24-2003, 09:21:00 PM did you make sure your surface was absolutely clean of oil, dirt or grease.also what kind of condition are the headers in,are they rusted or scaled ? the best surface is smooth clean and not contaminated.yes i used the permatex brand also.now if you want to re do the coating you'll have to remove the headers and have them bead blasted, this will give you a good surface to apply the anti-seize
