Could someone please verify if a 1970 Norwood trim tag should have Z27 under the accessory code to indicate SS car? Or if the tag has L34 for 396, does this assume it's an SS car and wouldn't have the Z27 code?

thanks

If the car has either L34 or L78 on the tag, it is a SS396. In 1970, GM chose to not put the extra Z27 information on the tags. Usually, the 71 models will have both.

The L34 and L78 engines were available only with the SS package, so this code is all you need to verify an SS car.

What Gary said is exactly the way my tag is - Norwood car, L34 only.

The way things are going with cars these days the next step is to verify it is a REAL trim tag AND the rivets are the correct ORIGINAL rivets.

Don't take anything for granted.

Thanks both, tag looks to be original, unmolested.

This topic came up awhile back, and the concensus seemed to be that the Z27 code did not make an appearance until 1971- EVEN on SS 350 cars. At that time I owned a 1970 SS 350 car with original engine, etc, and protect-o-plate but I was confused that Z27 was not on the cowl tag. Several other 1970 owners stated that their situation was the same. There were a couple of members who 'felt' otherwise, but no one was able to produce any actual proof at that time. I'd still be interested in seeing VERIFIABLE evidence of a 1970 cowl tag with Z27....

Chuck - It's not a time capsule or survivor class car if that's what you're asking. It has all the original major components - engine, transmission, rear end, 4spd shifter, body panels, interior, etc. The intake, carb, exhaust, distributor, hoses, wires and misc. small items have been replaced with non-original. I've been gathering all the correct dated components to put it back 100% correct. Hopefully that process will begin later this year.

The previous owner unfortunately didn't know what he had or what he was doing. It has a bad repaint that is a few shades off from Mulsanne Blue with white Z28 stripes right now. In summary, it's a very solid and mostly correct car in need of a major cosmetic restoration.

In 1992 or so I owned a legitimate L-34 1970 RS/SS car. It was loaded with a/c, rear defog, houndstooth, 4spd and gauges and was a Red car to boot. Last that I heard it was in Florida???? It was not an original 4spd car but somene had done a great job of changing with the correct console and hump.
Has anyone seen or heard of this car ???
